Ava DuVernay Developing a Labor Union Drama Series For TNT

According to Deadline, TNT is currently in the process of developing a new drama series centering on a labor union strike that will be led by women. Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay (Selma, When They See Us) will be executive producing the untitled series through her ARRAY Filmworks banner along with Kat Candler (Hellion) who will pen the series.

This project marks the second collaboration between DuVernay and Candler, who have worked together on the second and third seasons of OWN’s Queen Sugar.

The untitled series is an hour-long drama that will follow the aftermath of a deadly oil refinery explosion that takes the life of an old friend, a struggling young wife and mother will go on to lead one of the biggest labor union strikes in Texas history. It is also being described as a modern-day take on the 1979 Norma Rae film which starred Oscar winner Sally Field.

Last year, DuVernay had signed a massive $100 million multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group to produce new original content for broadcast and cable, premium cable, streaming services, and other platforms. The new series will be added to the slate of DuVernay’s ongoing projects which include: the DC film New Gods; the pilot adaptation of DMZ for HBO Max; Battle at Versailles; and Cherish the Day.
