Skullcandy Sesh (review)

In the wake of its Push and Indy true wireless earbuds, Skullcandy continues to shake up the market with its latest pair “Sesh.” What makes this pair stand out from its predecessors is its affordable price point. But can a pair that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg give you a suitable sound experience that’s equal or even better to those that are more expensive?

BUILD/DESIGN

When it comes to the look, it’s easy to see that the Sesh takes its design elements from its older sibling the “Push”. Opting for a more oval shape than that of the popular Airpods, the shape provides a proper seal for your ear canal to eliminate outside noise. The earbuds are exceptionally small, with a size registering just a tad bit smaller that of your fingertip and are incredibly lightweight.

The Sesh is comprised entirely out of plastic, which not only attributes to its lightweight but also its durability. Each channel has a single multi-function button that seamless blends in with the rest of the body. Eartips are angled for a smoother fit and feel, while the silicone tips will give you maximum comfort which will allow you to wear the Sesh for longer periods of time. There are LED lights on both channels that will indicate your current power level.

The pill-shaped carrying and charging case will fit nicely in your hands and can be stored away easily in either your bag or pants pocket. It’s finished in an attractive matte black color that doesn’t make it stand out but makes it still attractive to look at. Once you place the earbuds into the case you’ll get a nice snap that will securely hold the earbuds and insures that it charges properly. On the outside of the case, there are four LED lights for power indication and a button that will provide battery information when pushed.

PERFORMANCE

For a small and price-friendly pair, I had my doubts about the quality of sound the Sesh would be able to provide, but I was utterly surprised at the caliber that it was able to produce. The low end is considerably punchy, almost coming to life as you can feel the pulsating beat being pounded into your eardrum. The mid and high tones are lucid and crystal-clear, which give vocals a lively existence which in turn, makes them sound exciting.

Of course, the Sesh does have one drawback and that’s in the form of its battery. The earbuds themselves carry just around three hours of battery life, with the charging case giving it another seven hours. In total, the Sesh will give you ten hours of total listening time, which is significantly shorter battery life to that of its counterparts, but the Sesh can get a full-charge in just a couple hours to get you back to listening to your favorite music.

The functionality of the Sesh is pretty straight forward when using it to operate your smartphone. Single clicks, double clicks, triple clicks, and long presses will, of course, control different functions such as play, pause, activate your phone’s assistant, and skip music tracks. The button is highly responsive with a clicky response that lets you know that you’ve pressed it, and the Sesh is perfect for physical activity since it is rated IP-55 for sweat, dust, and water resistance.

FINAL REACTION

When it comes to truly wireless earbuds, it seems that Skullcandy listens to its fanbase to continually grow its product line. While most of us think that a higher price means higher and better audio quality, the Sesh comes onto the market to turn that completely on its head. This small and lightweight pair gives listeners what is quite possibly the best sound quality that Skullcandy has ever produced in a compact package. But its size is a perfect representation of its price. For just a mere $49.99 the Sesh will meet the expectation of almost any audiophile, that is of course if they value sound quality over battery life.

SCORE 4.5/5 ATOMS
