Hobbs & Shaw Opens to $180 Million and #1 Worldwide

Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw opened to #1 at the domestic box office and worldwide, bringing in $60.8 million in the US and another $120 million internationally for a worldwide opening of $180.8 million. Compared to the other films in the “main” Fast & Furious franchise, Hobbs & Shaw debuted to the lowest opening of the series in a decade, coming in lower than Fast and Furious (the fourth entry) which opened to $70.9 million in 2009 and which has the fifth highest opening in the series. Furious 7 remains the highest opening entry in the series with $147 million in 2015. Directed by David Leitch, the film stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, alongside Idris Elba and Vanessa Kirby.

Walt Disney Pictures’ The Lion King slipped to #2 at the domestic box office but still brought in $38.2 million for a US total of $430.9 million. Internationally the film managed $72 million for an international total of $764.9 million and a global total of $1.195 billion. Following this weekend the movie is now the #2 release of the year behind just Avengers: Endgame both domestically and worldwide.

Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood slipped to third place, with another $20 million domestically for a US total of $78.8 million and passing by his previous movie, The Hateful Eight. The film will likely have good legs for the rest of the summer and could cross the $100 million mark in the coming weeks, which would give Tarantino four films to cross that threshold domestically

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Far From Home fell to fourth place, dropping just 37% and bringing in $7.755 million for a domestic total of $360.3 million. Internationally the sequel brought in $9.5 million for an international total of $715 million and a global total of $1.075 billion.

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4 fell to fifth place with $7.2 million in the US and $10.2 million internationally. The sequel now sits at $410.1 million in the US and $549.2 million internationally for a global total of $959.3 million. The film is still the second highest grossing Toy Story movie both worldwide and domestic, sitting behind Toy Story 3.

Elsewhere at the box office:

A24’s The Farewell brought in $2.4 million after expanding to 409 screens from 135.

Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum crossed $170.1 million in the US and crossed $150 million internationally for a worldwide total of $320 million.
