The Walking Dead universe is getting bigger and bigger with new spinoff series coming to AMC. In the realm of video games, developer Survios is cooking up a VR game set in the world of The Walking Dead. You’ll get to play as your favorite characters in a virtual reality zombie-killing game, and we had the chance to play the game during E3 2019.
Survios has implemented gameplay elements from its games like Raw Data and Sprint Vector to give us a full range of movements and abilities. If you’ve played Sprint Vector, then you should be comfortable with moving in The Walking Dead. With the VR controller and moving your arm as if you’re walking, you can navigate the post-apocalyptic world. Those who have played Raw Data will be familiar with how to use weapons. It does take practice when you’re trying to shoot, reload, and switch weapons, but once that’s figured out, you’ll be taking down zombies like Rick Grimes. This game will have a variety of weapons including handguns and shotguns.
My personal favorite weapon is the sword. I was able to grab a zombie by the neck with one hand and hack it away with a sword on the other. The game will follow your hands’ movements, so you can actually slice and dice a zombie with accuracy. Do you want to slice the head off? Go ahead. What about stabbing the zombie in the skull? You bet! You can even carve on the zombie’s body like Zorro. If you just want to go crazy, you can hack it into pieces. The shotgun is another favorite, and what I’d like to do is get up close and personal and aim the shotgun underneath their chin. Once in range, pull the trigger and watch chunks fly. Yes, one can feel a little sadistic when playing this game.
In The Walking Dead universe, the people are usually the monsters, but I can understand why Survios has opted to exclude human enemies. If it did, the game is going to get a lot of exposure, whether they’re good or bad.
The Walking Dead: Onslaught will be available in Fall 2019. You can play the game early if you are headed down to San Diego Comic-Con. The demos will be available at DeadQuarters starting on Thursdasy, July 18, at 10 a.m. in downtown San Diego.
