Amazon’s The Boys (review)

The Boys

The Boys is the newest live-action superhero series on Amazon Prime Video, and it’s based on the comic book by Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Darick Robertson. Imagine if our world actually has superheroes. Would they be good? Bad? This show takes us into that world where they are treated like celebrities and gods, but behind the scenes, they are very bad apples. Superheroes acting naughty isn’t a new thing, but The Boys is a refreshing and twisted take with humorous jabs at the genre.

The series follows Hughie (Jack Quaid), a young man who loses his girlfriend due to a superhero accidentally killing her. Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), the leader of The Boys, recruits him to help the team of regular-yet-highly skilled people teach superheroes some manners.

And then there’s The 7, the show’s version of The Justice League. Homelander is the leader and is inspired by Superman, Maeve acts like Wonder Woman, and more.

The comic book is very graphic, and fans will be happy to learn that the series is able to capture a lot of the mature content including bloody violence and sex. And it does contain lots of sex and violence. Some may think that the violence is gratuitous, but it helps enhance the shock factor when the superheroes are seen doing awful things.

There are moments in the comic that featured some controversial scenes, and it was interesting to see whether the show would do it. As it turns out, the team didn’t shy away from that, and they were able to make said character feel more fleshed out and powerful.

The Boys is a dark, funny and twisted take on superheroes, and it will really make you think about whether superheroes can be trusted.

The Boys will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 26, 2019. It’s also been announced that the show has been renewed for a second season
