Marvel Studios has had quite a run with the incredible Infinity Saga, but unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Eleven years of storytelling is about to end with Spider-Man: Far From Home: The 23rd film in the Infinity Saga. Even though Avengers: Endgame felt like a perfect ending to Phase 3, does Spider-Man: Far From Home give the saga the sendoff it so properly deserves?
In a way, it does. Spider-Man: Far From Home is not perfect by any means. The film is chock full of storylines and jokes that could be overwhelming to some. However, those that enjoy the fun and laughs of Marvel Studios’ films can easily find a lot to like with Far From Home. It’s thoroughly entertaining.
Spider-Man: Far From Home follows Peter Parker as he tries to live a regular teenage life while living in the shadow of his mentor, Tony Stark. As he travels abroad with his classmates, Nick Fury crashes his vacation with a mission that could threaten the world. Now, Peter must decide what’s more important: Living the superhero life or living a regular teenage life while professing his love for MJ.
As sad as Avengers: Endgame was, Spider-Man: Far From Home is the total antithesis to that film. In other words, the film is not depressing at all. It’s actually a total laugh-riot from beginning to end. In a way, it’s a lot like Thor: Ragnarok. Far From Home throws so many jokes at you that you’ll be amused the entire time. On the other hand, there are some gags and jokes that are a bit too much. In fact, certain scenes tend to be too long because of all the humor.
Regardless, the film serves as a nice endpoint for the current phase of films. The ghost of Iron Man reigns supreme in Far From Home’s storyline. Not only does Spider-Man have to live in Iron Man’s shadow but there are a lot of references dating all the way back to the original Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. may not be in the film, but his presence still lives on.
Unfortunately, there’s quite an overabundance of plotlines in this film too. Similar to Peter Parker being overwhelmed with everything going on, the audience will be overwhelmed with all these interconnecting storylines. Some of the subplots are interesting, though. Seeing Peter Parker struggle with his normal life and superhero life has always been a staple of the comics. Even though we’ve seen this before, seeing Peter struggle to move past Iron Man’s shadow is fascinating to watch. There’s a lot to live up to and Peter struggles to keep up every single day.
On the other hand, there are plotlines in the film that aren’t as good. It’s not surprising since there are a lot of characters in the film. As a result, these narratives are simply in there to give characters something to do. Nevertheless, once the film finds its footing, Far From Home is finally able to settle down and focus on the villainous plot.
Speaking of the villain, he’s as great as you can imagine. If you’re a fan of this character, then he’s as great as you can imagine. His story does change to fit modern times, but the core characteristics of this character are there. He’s fun and surprising to watch, and his connection to Spider-Man is the best part of the film.
Once again, Tom Holland is able to bring his awkward and dorky personality to Peter Parker. At the same time, he brings a sad and naive performance as well. Basically, he plays the teenage role quite well. Jake Gyllenhaal also brings such a fun performance to Mysterio. He steals a lot of scenes—especially towards the second half of the film.
Since Spider-Man: Far From Home is easily Spider-Man and Mysterio’s film, the rest of the cast are unfortunately left to the wayside. So don’t expect to see a lot of Zendaya, Samuel L. Jackson, Jacob Batalon, and Cobie Smulders in the film. In addition, don’t expect them to do anything important in the film either. Sadly, that’s what happens when you have a ton of side characters in a solo superhero film.
Overall, Spider-Man: Far From Home is a hilariously fun and entertaining Spider-Man film. Unfortunately, the film is quite a handful. The film has an overabundance of storylines and jokes that can be a bit too much. Either way, it may not be a perfect film, but Far From Home is still a fun film for the entire family.
