Magic: The Gathering is a collectible card game that has been around since 1993. It has over 38 million players worldwide, and over twenty billion Magic cards have been produced. Now after 25 years, Magic: The Gathering is finally getting its own animated series. Netflix has announced that it has teamed up with Avengers: Endgame’s Joe and Anthony Russo, Wizards of The Coast, and Hasbro’s Allspark Animation to bring the fantasy world to life.

Fans of Magic: The Gathering and those curious will get to experience a new storyline featuring the Planeswalkers, powerful beings in the multiverse comprised of heroes and villains.

Joe and Anthony Russo will serve as the executive producers and will be overseeing the creation of the new storyline and expanding the stories of the Planeswalkers. The creative talent behind the animated Magic: The Gathering series have worked on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Batman: The Animated Series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Firefly, Agent Carter, Ultimate Spider-Man and The Lego Movies.

Overseeing the series production is Octopie, an animation network and studio, and Todd Makurath, Eric Calderon, and Dave Newberg will be serving as producers with Mike Larocca and Isaac Krauss as executive producers.

Hen Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jose Molina (The Tick, Agent Carter) will be the lead writers and co-executive producers with Yoriaki Mochizuki as supervising director and co-executive producer. Bardel Entertainment (Rick & Morty, Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) is working on the animation.

“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” said Joe and Anthony Russo.

“Working with Joe and Anthony, Wizards of the Coast, and Netflix on such a universally cherished brand is a real highlight for our studio.” said Isaac Krauss, CEO of Octopie. “Our goal is to not only tell a compelling story leveraging Magic: The Gathering’s incredible body of work, but to also push the medium and perception of storytelling through animation. This series will cross the genres of suspenseful thriller, horror, and drama with deeply developed characters the likes of which are not often seen in animation.”
