Apple eager to produce Oscar contenders, eyeing six movies a year

Following Netflix’s incredible victory at the 91st Oscars earlier this year with their critically-acclaimed film Roma taking home two Oscars, The New York Post reports that Apple is trying to duplicate Netflix’s success by planning to release six small movies a year that could win Academy Awards.

According to the outlet’s source (via SlashFilm), Apple has already engaged themselves in talks with “elevated” directors and other film talent in recent months, talking about potential projects that may qualify for an Oscar consideration. In addition, it was also revealed that the company is willing to spend “$5 million to $30 million per project.”

No names were given as filmmakers that have been approached by Apple, for these projects, but their original video subscription service boasts projects from the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Octavia Spencer, J.J. Abrams, Jason Momoa, M. Night Shyamalan, Jon M. Chu, and more. It remains to be seen if these films will premiere on the Apple TV+ platform alongside a theatrical debut.

J.J. Abrams also hit the stage with Sarah Bareilles, who performed the theme song for the upcoming Little Voice, with Oprah Winfrey following up with her two documentary series being developed for Apple.
