The CW introduced Ruby Rose as Batwoman during the 2018 crossover event “Elseworlds” with Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. Soon she’ll have her own show this fall, and the network has released a new trailer, showing us the origin story for Kate Kane, Bruce Wayne’s cousin and Batwoman.
In the new trailer, it’s revealed that Batman has abandoned Gotham City. Kate Kane discovers the Batcave and decides to don the Batman suit herself… well, to her specifications. We also get a glimpse of her personal life including hints at the romance between her and Sophie Moore and her relationship with her father, Jacob Kane.
Check out the first look trailer below:
What are the reactions from fans? They have been all over the place, with some feeling very excited and others rolling their eyes at the dialogue.
This fan below jokes about how Ruby Rose can turn straight girls gay.

This fan feels like they’ve been represented.
Something I didn't know was inside me just broke at seeing a superhero that doesn't have to be femme to be fierce. I feel…seen?https://t.co/sDzRdhztSi

YESSS! A great trailer for the #Batwoman TV series. And that's "just" material from the pilot episode (the only one that was filmed so far).

Best part of that #Batwoman trailer for me is Ruby Rose kicking ass in a Ramones t-shirt.

Although this fan is excited, his question is whether viewers will see Bruce Wayne or Batman.
The trailer for #Batwoman looks really good. My big question is where is Bruce? They say Batman gave up on Gotham & his office looks like no one has been in there for a while. Yet, he is referred to in a way that sounds like he is at least still alive…

I wasn’t too keen on Ruby being cast as Batwoman, but after seeing this trailer, I’m ready to give the show a real try! pic.twitter.com/EqX8iNlJpD

i like what i saw from the Batwoman trailer, shall certainly be watching that

The #Batwoman trailer looks so good I might be able to overlook the fact that Kate isn't a redhead.

Can't wait for #Batwoman after seeing the trailer

Although this fan enjoyed the trailer, the lines felt cheesy for him.
Watched "Batwoman" trailer and it did look good enough for me, but then those cheesy lines from Ruby Rose hit me hard.
I mean, I still watch it, because I like the character, but my gosh, why.

This fan is excited about the series but did not like the trailer.
Well I was excited to see the Batwoman series but that first trailer honestly makes it look fucking shite!

One fan thought the trailer if cringe-worthy, and another defended it.
Fuck what ya heard, i thought it was a great trailer and I'm definitely looking forward to Ruby Rose playing Batwoman especially after elseworlds and her role in John Wick which she seems to put to good use in this trailer

This is where we get to the critics of the trailer.
This fan thinks the batsuit looks cheap.
The batsuit from the #Batwoman trailer is exactly what I pictured an Arrowverse Batman suit to look like. Cheap pic.twitter.com/LfIhwf2Ysr

This fan feels like the CW is trash and quotes a top comment from the trailer.
Just saw the new Batwoman trailer and the top comment…. I agree. It ends with, "Not gonna let a man take credit for a woman's work" When the trailer literally as the comment describes. CW has always been trash with their comic book stuff except for Arrow IMO pic.twitter.com/ISddw4p8v4
— Repzion (@DDsulzbach) May 16, 2019
The comment reads:
“>Breaks into Wayne Tower
>Steals Suit
>Steals Technology
>Steals Persona
>Literally takes everything from Bruce Wayne who built up his own legacy from the ground up
“I’m not about to let a man take credit for a woman’s work”
GEEZ CW, do you not see how incredible hurtful and insane this is for young girls.
How much better would it be if she said: “They think I am Batman, I’m going to show them that Batman isn’t Gotham’s only Protector.”
One Twitter user is still not sold on Ruby’s acting.
just watched the batwoman trailer and yeah ruby rose’s acting is still bad

#Batwoman already had 2 strikes against it because it was on the CW but the trailer is the third. pic.twitter.com/irM2sHxZIC

That #Batwoman trailer did absolutely nothing at all for me.
It feels so flat, I’ll give it a go but 🤷♂️ the trailer didn’t get me pumped.

I was watching the Batwoman trailer, thinking; "This looks awful, but at least that stupid outfit with the red hair isn't there."
I thought too soon.— Hell Richards (@Hell_Richards) May 16, 2019
#Batwoman trailer just made me physically ill. It couldn't be more of a feminist drenched, politically charged dumpster fire if it tried. Every other line in the trailer was "WOMEN ARE BEST"
Can't wait for this feminist push to die.Maybe then we can get some decent shows again— Alith Anar (@Kellursa) May 16, 2019
Except for the HORRIBLY CORNY LINES in the trailer, the #Batwoman trailer looked decent.
Tip for BW writers, write less things for Ruby, she is annoying when speaking, and just add more fighting scenes.— Canadagraphs (@canadagraphs) May 16, 2019
One of the first lines in the trailer is, "Batman gave up."
Fuck. You. #Batwoman
— Thorias Unlimited (@theRealFK9) May 16, 2019
The Batwoman trailer was terrible
— Ante (@_Berstuk) May 16, 2019
Batwoman trailer drops! @BoundingComics covers it in an article and I have to say it looks… OK.
Little disappointed they really seem to be pushing a #feminist narrative w/ a female hero, love interest & big bad, with the male CROWS security seeming evil or incompetent.

Synopsis: Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) never planned to be Gotham’s new vigilante. Three years after Batman mysteriously disappeared, Gotham is a city in despair. Without the Caped Crusader, the Gotham City Police Department was overrun and outgunned by criminal gangs. Enter Jacob Kane (Dougray Scott) and his military-grade Crows Private Security, which now protects the city with omnipresent firepower and militia. Years before, Jacob’s first wife and daughter were killed in the crossfire of Gotham crime.
He sent his only surviving daughter, Kate Kane, away from Gotham for her safety. After a dishonorable discharge from military school and years of brutal survival training, Kate returns home when the Alice in Wonderland gang targets her father and his security firm, by kidnapping his best Crow officer Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy). Although remarried to wealthy socialite Catherine Hamilton-Kane (Elizabeth Anweis), who bankrolls the Crows, Jacob is still struggling with the family he lost, while keeping Kate –– the daughter he still has –– at a distance. But Kate is a woman who’s done asking for permission. In order to help her family and her city, she’ll have to become the one thing her father loathes –– a dark knight vigilante.
With the help of her compassionate stepsister, Mary (Nicole Kang), and the crafty Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson), the son of Wayne Enterprises’ tech guru Lucius Fox, Kate Kane continues the legacy of her missing cousin, Bruce Wayne, as Batwoman. Still holding a flame for her ex-girlfriend, Sophie, Kate uses everything in her power to combat the dark machinations of the psychotic Alice (Rachel Skarsten), who’s always somewhere slipping between sane and insane. Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate soars through the shadowed streets of Gotham as Batwoman. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, she must first overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
Batwoman is developed by Caroline Dries and Greg Berlanti. It stars Ruby Rose as Kate Kane / Batwoman, Meagan Tandy as Sophie Moore, Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox, Nicole Kang as Mary Hamilton, Rachel Skarsten as Alice, Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane, and Elizabeth Anweis as Catherine Hamilton-Kane.
Batwoman will air Sunday nights and will premiere Fall 2019 on The CW.
