Avengers: Endgame directors on pitching Iron Man arc to Robert Downey Jr

Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame is on track to surpass Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the worldwide box office. It has also broken all kinds of records including being the first film to reach $1 billion at the global box office for its debut week. There’s a lot of excitement about the film, and it even caused a woman to sob uncontrollably at the theater to the point where she needed to be rushed to the hospital. Some fans even beat up a man for shouting out spoilers at a theater. Director Anthony and Joe Russo have been busy with answering questions about the film, and they even talked about meeting with Robert Downey Jr to see if he would be okay with their Iron Man arc.

Spoilers Ahead for Avengers: Endgame

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the directors talk about pitching the conclusion to Tony Stark’s arc in Avengers: Endgame.

“We did pitch Robert his arc, because he kicked off the entire MCU,” Anthony Russo said. “The Tony Stark arc is the longest and perhaps fullest in the MCU. Once we decided we wanted this kind of ending for the character, we certainly wanted to make sure Robert was comfortable with it, just because of his enormous contribution to the MCU. We did pitch it out. We went over to meet with him and we pitched it out to him.”

“A lot of the actors are not opinionated about what we do,” he continued. “They like the fact that we are sort of in control of these stories and we are driving where they should go and we have a vision for where they should go and they trust in that. I think Downey may have had mixed emotions about thinking about [where Tony Stark ends up in Endgame], but I think at the end of the day, he totally accepted it.”

“We’ve been working on that arc for this movie since Civil War,” Joe Russo added. “We’ve been setting Downey up for this particular performance for two films now.”

Synopsis: The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from the screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. It stars Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlet Johansson as Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Tessa Thompson as Valkeryie.
