During WonderCon in Anaheim, CA, guests were treated to several panels that celebrated the 80th anniversary of the World’s Greatest Detective, “Batman.” Fans were exclusively shown the latest series in Batman comics with Scott Snyder’s “Batman: The Last Knight”. It shows the Cape Crusader locked up in a padded cell for the last 15 to 20 years for killing his parents, and that the idea of Batman was all in his head.
As exciting as that was, nothing seemed to draw more awes from the audience than the official announcement of a Nightwing movie during the WB panel. It was surprising to hear that Warner Brothers Studios has officially greenlit a Nightwing film completely out of nowhere, but with the upcoming Joker, Birds of Prey, and Suicide Squad 2 movies, and of course a new Batman film from Matt Reeves, it looks like Warner Brothers wants to go all in with the Batman Universe.
The last time we heard any news about the Nightwing film was when Lego: Batman Director Chris McKay, who is slated to direct the film, reassured fans via Twitter that the movie was still alive, and that casting has not happened just yet. This gave fans a bit of hope but was still met with skepticism that the movie was still at the bottom of WB’s priority list. But it seems that has changed as Chris McKay appeared towards the end of the WB panel to announce who they have cast as the titular character.
Chris McKay revealed that Aaron Johnson, who we last saw in a superhero role as Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron, will be playing the role of Dick Grayson/Nightwing. He is currently filming the third Kingsman film and has previously shown his fighting abilities on the successful Kick-Ass movies, so it seems like a perfect fit that the actor takes the mantle as Nightwing.
According to Chris and WB, after years of being the Dark Knights trusted sidekick, Dick Grayson sees that Batman’s methods have resulted in absolutely no change in Gotham City. Criminals and villains are ramping up their tactics of mayhem and destruction, which have made things slightly difficult for the dynamic duo. Dick separates himself from Batman and adopts the Nightwing persona to take on the new breed of criminals.
Warners Brothers have expressed that the upcoming Nightwing film will be separate from the current Dick Grayson on the Titans series, played by Brenton Thwaites, and will also have no connection to the upcoming Batman film directed by Matt Reeves. Nightwing is scheduled to begin production at the end of the year, with a 2021 release.
