Warner Bros. has plenty of event films for its 2019 slate including Shazam!, which is now in theaters. It is continuing its partnership with CJ 4DPLEX by offering the 4DX theater experience for its upcoming films. Don’t be sad if you missed out on Shazam! or The Curse of La Llorona since there will be other movies coming out that will utilize the format like Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Annabelle Comes Home, It: Chapter Two and Joker.
Check out the films and their release dates below:
- Pokémon: Detective Pikachu on May 10th
- Godzilla: King of the Monsters on May 31st
- Annabelle Comes Home on June 28th
- It: Chapter Two on September 6th
- Joker on October 4th
If you haven’t had the chance to experience 4DX, you should definitely try it out on these huge, action-packed films. The immersive technology utilizes motion seats and special effects in the actual theater auditorium that simulate wind, fog, rain, lightning, snow, bubble, scents, vibration and heat. (Depending on the theater location.) Imagine watching a movie like Godzilla: King of the Monsters where you can feel the heat from Rodan bursting out of the volcano or see lightning effects in the theater as Ghidorah terrorizes the Titans and people.
4DX is available in 600 locations worldwide with 17 across the nation.
CJ 4DPLEX is cooking up some other experiences for the movie-going audiences. During CinemaCon, we got to experience the 4DX VR experiences. The company is planning on bringing this form of entertainment to theater lobbies. When you’re waiting around for the movie to start, you’ll be able to test out the world of VR in the theater lobby while on a 4DX seat. With both technologies combined, you will feel like you’re part of the action. The demo we tested was an on-rails shooter where we were blasting away at creatures in a helicopter with our rifles. The VR helps to bring the visuals close to you while the motion seats simulate the movement of the helicopter. It feels like an amusement park attraction, that’s for sure.
I do have a word of caution. If you’re prone to motion sickness, having a VR headset over your head while being moved around in the 4DX seats may have an effect on you.
Also at CinemaCon was a prototype for its flight motion seats, which reminds us of Soarin’ Around the World from Disney’s California Adventure. We didn’t get to see it in action, but looking at the model got us excited about the possibilities of upcoming movies utilizing the technology. This would be great for movies like Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
