Captain Marvel shoots for the stars at the weekend box office!

Looks like Marvel Studios may have their 21st consecutive winner as Captain Marvel dominated the worldwide box office in her opening weekend. The Brie Larson-starrer took in $153 million at the domestic box office, making it the third-highest March opening of all-time as well as the seventh-highest Marvel Cinematic Universe opening behind the three Avengers movies, Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3. The film also managed to earn an “A” CinemaScore despite the fleet of online trolls determined to undermine the film’s perception as a crowd pleaser.

Overseas Captain Marvel also managed to astonish with $302 million, giving the film the fifth highest international opening weekend of all-time and the sixth largest worldwide debut ever, for an estimated total of $455 million all-in.

Dreamworks Animation’s trilogy-capper How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World had a 51% drop in its third weekend to take the #2 spot with $14.6 million for a domestic total of $119.6 million and worldwide haul of $435.1 million.

A Madea Family Funeral, writer/director/star Tyler Perry’s swan song as the title character, dropped 55% in its second weekend with $12 million for a $45.8 million domestic total.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part held onto the #4 spot with $3.8 million for a domestic total of $97.1 million, and a worldwide cume of $164.4 million. The film is slowly limping to $100 million domestically, a certain disappointment for WB.

Dropping two places to #5 is the Robert Rodriguez-directed/James Cameron-produced sci-fi epic Alita: Battle Angel with $3.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $78.3 million. However, it took in another $11.6 million internationally to bring its overseas total over $300 million for a not-too-shabby worldwide take of over $382 million, with a cross over the $400 million mark likely by next weekend.
