The Umbrella Academy is now available on Netflix, and we had the chance to chat with Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, and David Castaneda. The series follows a dysfunctional family with superpowers, with the three actors portraying foster siblings. Tom Hopper plays Luther, who has superhuman strength. Emmy Raver-Lampman plays Allison, who has the ability to make a rumor come true. Last but not least, David Castaneda plays Diego, who is very deadly with knives. The actors discuss the romantic dance sequence, favorite characters, best times on the set and more.
“That was special, wasn’t it?” Hopper said about his dancing scene with Raver-Lampman.
“Here’s the thing, Tom has never danced like that before, correct?” Raver-Lampman said. “We learned that in seven hours over four days, and we only did like five takes and got the whole thing. I have a theatre background; I am very versed in learning dances and choreography. For someone who hadn’t ever done that before, it was unbelievable. You smashed it.”
“I think it’s edited very well,” Hopper jokes.
“I’m trying to give you a compliment. Take it,” Raver-Lampman laughs.
Scenes can get heated between Luther, Diego, Allison, and the rest of The Umbrella Academy family. They talk about what those scenes were like.
“That was the best part,” Raver-Lampman said. “Those are the days on set we enjoy the most because we all splinter off throughout the season and have our own storylines and we’re not together all the time. So anytime it was like a family day or a day where we’re all in a room together, these were always my favorite days. In between takes we just stay in the room, chat, catch up and laugh. We all just get along all so well. Steve Blackman and Peter Hoar, they get all the credit for figuring out these six random strangers would work well together.”
The Umbrella Academy has a large roster, and the cast shares their favorite characters.
“I love Agnes,” Raver-Lampman said. “She steals my heart.
“Her and Cameron have the most beautiful relationship,” Castaneda added.
“That’s a really special arc,” Hopper continued. “Number Five is also a great character and really well written. Aidan executes it really well.”
