During the TCA Legion Panel, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner talked about how she’s okay with Fox giving Disney the reigns for the X-Men franchise and praising Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige that he will do a good job. Additionally, she talked about the future of Wolverine, Gambit, and X-Force. As for the X-Men franchise under Disney, she did have a word of warning about having too many Marvel and X-Men movies.
“You cannot have too many Marvel, X-Men superhero movies out there,” Shuler Donner said. “We’ll cancel each other out. Each one has to be distinctive. You have The Avengers to follow through; there are so many distinctive canons to follow through and you have to have new ones to focus on. For us, it’s a lot and people will get sick of them. We have to be careful; he (Kevin) has to be careful. You can’t have more than four (franchises out there).”
However, Feige has been pumping out Marvel films left and right. Last year we saw three films including Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp. This year in 2019, we have three films to look forward to with Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far from Home. Can Marvel Studios pull it off to do four films a year in the future?
Feige did mention before that he wanted to capture the comic book crossover events on the big screen, and he pulled it off with The Avengers. We’ll just have to wait and see what Disney and Marvel Studios have in store in the future.
For now, fans of Fox’s X-Men franchise can still check out X-Men: Dark Phoenix in theaters on June 7, 2019, and The New Mutants on August 2nd.
Shuler Donner did express sadness if The New Mutants film were to hit Hulu instead.
“I want to see it released (theatrically), I’d hate to see it thrown at Hulu,” said the producer.
