Fangoria Chainsaw Awards: Toni Collette, Hereditary win big

Toni Collette’s incredible performance in the independent horror movie Hereditary may have been snubbed at the Oscars, but the actress and film won top awards at Fangoria’s annual Chainsaw Awards.

Last night, Fangoria revealed that Collette won Best Actress for her role in Hereditary, with Alex Wolff winning Best Supporting Actor. Ari Aster won Best Director for the horror feature, who also took home the award for Best Screenplay. Hereditary also won Best Kill and Best-Wide Release Movie.

Nicolas Cage took home Best Actor for his role in Panos Cosmatos’ revenge-thriller Mandy. Best Score went to the film’s late composer Jóhann Jóhannson, and the film also won Best Limited-Release Movie.

Tilda Swinton won Best Supporting Actress for the Suspiria remake. The film also won for Best Makeup FX with Mark Coulier taking home the award. Mike Flanagan’s Netflix horror anthology The Haunting of Hill House won Best Series, while Netflix’s Bird Box won Best Streaming Premiere Movie. Terrified won Best Foreign Language Movie, and The Ritual won Best Creature FX with the award going to Sierra Russell and Josh Russell.

In Hereditary, when Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.

Hereditary was written and directed by Ari Aster and produced by Lars Knudsen and Kevin Frake.
