With the Disney and Fox deal almost closing, many fans have expressed concern about the future of Deadpool. Fans are adamant about Deadpool being rated R, but with Fox being under Disney, they were afraid that the character would receive the PG-13 treatment. During an investors call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that Deadpool could still be rated R, but the films will be made in a way that won’t confuse audiences.
“We do believe there is enough room for the Fox properties to exist without significant Disney influence over the nature of the content,” Iger said. “Meaning that we see there is certainly popularity amongst Marvel fans for the R-rated Deadpool films. For instance, we’re going to continue in that business and there might be room for more of that. There’s nothing that we’ve really seen in the Fox library or activities that Fox is engaging in today that would be of concern to us as long as we’re very carefully branding them and making sure that we’re not in any way confusing the consumer with product that would be Disney product or the more traditional Marvel product.”
With Disney not looking to put Deadpool under the Marvel or Disney banners, it sounds like we won’t be seeing him mingle with characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As for X-Men and Fantastic Four, Feige is excited about having access to them under Marvel Studios.
“The notion of the characters coming back is great, Feige said. “It’s nice when a company that created all these characters can have access to all those characters. It’s unusual not to. But in terms of actually thinking about it and actually planning things, we haven’t started that yet.”
There’s a rumor of the Black Widow movie possibly being rated R, but with Iger being careful about not confusing audiences, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.
