“Unattended Baggage takes an honest look at one of the United States’ most despised subcultures to question what being “fam” really means with the World Premiere of American Juggalo. As a night at The Gathering of the Juggalos unfolds, a group of hardcore Insane Clown Posse (ICP) fans begin to question what being a Juggalo is really about and if their shared love of ICP is strong enough for them to create a chosen family that will stand the test of time.

American Juggalo has received development through Mom’s Insurance Writer’s Group (2016); an Artist-In-Residency at Porterspace (2017); Vital Joint (2018); and the New Ohio Theatre’s Producers Club (2019).

Drew Weinstein thoughtfully directs a phenomenal cast of actors: Niara Seña, Linus Gelber, Cody Nash Edwards, Took Edalow, Lauren E Butler, Jarrod Zayas, and Maxim Swinton.

American Juggalo is written by Sean Pollock adapted from the 2011 documentary of the same name by Sean Dunne, featuring additional interviews by the playwright conducted at Webster Hall (2016), The Well (2017), The Gathering Of The Juggalos (2018), selected found text from the documentary I’ve Been Down – The Gathering 2011 by Brendan Jamieson, additional inspiration from Behind The Paint by Violent J and selected anecdotes from the playwright’s real-life experiences.

“When I first saw the documentary American Juggalo on Reddit, I was immediately fascinated and shocked. Here were a group of tight-knit people dressed up in clown face paint who had piercings, gages, tattoos and dyed hair of different shapes, sizes, and skin color and I thought: why aren’t we seeing these people on stage? I mean, I can only think of one play in recent history on a commercial level that even featured someone with artificial hair color.” Sean Pollock, the playwright states: “The Juggalos have been the butt of so many jokes for years, but over the past three years field research such as going to ICP concerts and the Gathering of The Juggalos and collecting interviews, I’ve learned that there’s something special about them that I’ve grown to love and appreciate; even when they misbehave. They are not a gang. They are not bigots. They are a loving, yet flawed family who accepts everyone who accepts them. However, when you open that door of inclusivity too wide-you invite unwanted family members, and that’s what the play aims to explore.”

American Juggalo has received development through Mom’s Insurance Writer’s Group (2016); an Artist-In-Residency at Porterspace (2017); Vital Joint (2018); and the New Ohio Theatre’s Producers Club (2019).

About the show

American Juggalo is a snapshot of the often mocked and misunderstood subculture of Juggalos, hardcore Insane Clown Posse (ICP) fans, who meet once a year for four days at The Gathering of the Juggalos. On the last night of The Gathering, a group of Juggalos from different walks of life come together to swap stories, share experiences, and party. As the night unfolds, they begin to question if their shared love of one band is strong enough to create a lasting bond, and what it means to be “fam.” American Juggalo is a new docu-theatre piece adapted from the 2011 documentary short by Sean Dunne along with interviews conducted by the playwright from Insane Clown Posse shows at Webster Hall, The Well, and the 2018 Gathering of the Juggalos. ”
