Warner Bros to focus less on DC Extended Universe after Aquaman’s box office success

Warner Bros. is already on track of focusing on standalone movies with no signs of another Justice League movie. It makes sense after seeing the box numbers for Justice League, which made less than Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Aquaman is the first DCEU film to hit the $1 billion mark, and because of that, the DC Extended Universe is definitely below Warner Bros’ radar.

When asked what the success of Aquaman has in store for the DC Extended Universe, Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich has bad news for fans.

“We all feel like we’ve turned a corner now,” said Emmerich. “We’re playing by the DC playbook, which is very different than the Marvel playbook. We are far less focused on a shared universe. We take it one movie at a time. Each movie is its own equation and own creative entity. If you had to say one thing about us, it’s that it always has to be about the directors.”

Warner Bros has realized that it shouldn’t try to copy Marvel Studios and its Marvel Cinematic Universe. We can already see the shift in focus with Shazam! and the standalone Joker film, which isn’t going to be connected to the DCEU and acts as an origin story for the Joker.

For those wanting to see a crossover that was teased at the end of Justice League, they will most likely be out of luck. It’s sad too since seeing heroes crossing over isn’t just reserved for Marvel. DC has been doing this for decades, with one example being The Flash of Two Worlds crossover event in 1961. The good news is that Warner Bros. is going back to making movies, so hopefully, we get something like The Dark Knight trilogy again.

Aquaman did mention the events of Justice League, even if it’s a throwaway line, and with Wonder Woman 1984 coming out soon, maybe we’ll get to see another nod to the DC Extended Universe. If not, then you know the reason why.
