Resident Evil 2 Remake gets high scores, already contender for Game of the Year 2019

Capcom has been on a roll with its recent Resident Evil releases. Resident Evil 7 came out with praises from critics and gamers, and it truly is the scariest game in the series. The horror elements are really amplified with the PlayStation VR. Now we have reviews popping up for the Resident Evil 2 remake, and sites are giving the game very high scores along with a few saying it’s a contender for Game of the Year 2019.

Fandom gives the game a 5/5.

“It sets a new bar for what a video game remake can be, masterfully marrying nostalgia with modernity without quite being a slave to one or the other. And so barely a month into 2019, we have our first front-running contender for Game of the Year.”

The Guardian gives it a 5/5.

“For veterans who remember the original (and I reviewed it at the time), it is an unmissable nostalgic treat. For those who don’t know their T-Viruses from their Code Veronicas, the experience is easily vivid and entertaining enough to stand on its own merits. This is horror game design as true craft.”

EGM gives the game a 9.5/10.

“More than just a simple remake of a cherished classic, Resident Evil 2 is a reinvigoration of the entire franchise, showing just how much life it still has left without the need to make drastic gameplay or stylistic changes.”

Shacknews is already saying it’s a contender for Game of the Year 2019.

“From top to bottom, this is already an early contender for Game of the Year 2019, and one of the greatest reasons ever to be a survival horror fan.”

Destructoid gives the game a 9/10.

“Most of the spirit of the original has been preserved and in many cases, enhanced.”

Gamespot, a site that usually is more critical of games compared to other sites, gave Resident Evil 2 Remake a 9/10.

“Though Resident Evil 2 has its roots firmly in the past, it reworks the familiar horrors into something that feels brand new and all its own.”

IGN gave the game an 8.8 score.

“Capcom did a fantastic job of resurrecting all the best parts of the classic Resident Evil 2 and making them look, sound, and play like a 2019 game.”

GamesRadar has a score of 4/5:

“A beautifully made and reverent take on the original game that works both as a remake and a completely new game.”

Screen Rant gave the game 4 out of 5 stars.

“While it falls short of the original in some areas, particularly the interplay between its two protagonists, it more than exceeds it in terms of gameplay, even surpassing the high water mark set by Resident Evil 7. Even players with no nostalgia for the original will still find plenty to love (and be terrified by) in this dark retelling of Resident Evil 2.”

The lowest score comes from Gamer.no, which gave the game a 7/10.

“By trying to please so many different players the game will probably not satisfy anyone completely. Resident Evil veterans will feel like it is a bit too simple and unfaithful. New players will wonder about the 90s logic in spending so much time looking for keys so you can politely unlock doors when your backpack is loaded with rocket launchers and oversized shotguns which could just as easily have blown them off their hinges.”

Resident Evil 2 Remake is a remake of the 1998 game that was originally made for the PlayStation. At the time, it featured beautifully rendered cutscenes. Technology has finally caught up where the in-game graphics of the remake looks way better than the pre-rendered CG cutscenes of the original.
