Our journey inside Alita: Battle Angel – Passport to Iron City

Alita: Battle Angel - Passport to Iron City

Alita: Battle Angel is coming to theaters in February, and to get fans excited about the upcoming movie, a new and limited immersive experience is popping up in Los Angeles, New York City and Austin. The Los Angeles location is opening first starting on January 23rd, with New York on the 26th and Austin on January 29th. Nerd Reactor was invited to check out the LA location, and what we’ve seen is the world of Alita brought to life filled with fun and intense activities. Guests in Passport to Iron City will have to score a lot of points to be the top team, and they’ll be able to visit different areas featured from the film including a scrapyard, piano room, market place, lab, and the Motorball area.

The Los Angeles location for Alita: Battle Angel – Passport to Iron City is located in Downtown LA, and the entrance is at the fictional Iron City Taqueria. A random passerby would probably think that this is a random taco spot. However, don’t be fooled by its cover.

Once inside, you’ll be checked in, and this is where you’ll be getting your Iron City Passport complete with a unique QR code. The QR code will help track your activities in Iron City, and once the game is over, you’ll be receiving an assessment report for your usefulness in Iron City.

Kansas Bar

Once you have your passport ready, you’ll be entering the Kansas bar, which is an exact replica of the bar featured in the film. There’s a giant Kansas sign on the wall glowing brightly, and it sets up the mood for Alita’s world. This is where you’ll meet your group base on color assignment, and you will be introduced to the first Iron City resident. Lito was our go-to guy who helped us with any questions about Iron City. One of the first activities is looking at your passport to see a unique symbol. You will need to search for another player with the exact symbol to help you get more points for your team.

The bar actually has wine and beer, and each location features an exclusive beer. For the Los Angeles location, we had the Panzer Kunst, a pale ale named after the martial art focused on fighting in zero gravity. There’s also boxed water, and my personal favorite, Mexican Coke.

Once you have met up with your team and the denizens, it’s time to get ready to play. You’ll receive a map, and you’ll need to navigate to your first specified area and earn points. Once you’re finished, you have to move fast to the next available area. There is a time limit, so you and your team will need to be quick and ready while also getting as many points as possible.

Near the end of the game, everyone will gather near the Motorball area and watch the race. You’ll get to spend the points you’ve earned on a racer, and if they win, you’ll get double that amount. However, if you lose, you’ll lose that amount. Of course, Passport to Iron City won’t be able to replicate the cinematic version of Motorball in the Alita: Battle Angel film, but watching the 2D race on a screen with other rival teams is an exhilarating experience as you’re cheering on for your pick.

In the end, we didn’t get the top spot on the scoreboard, but it’s all about the journey, right? [Cries in the corner.]

Alita: Battle Angel – Passport to Iron City is a collaboration between the creative production company iam8bit and entertainment firm The Seelig Group.

“Typically how something like this comes to be is two months before the film opens, you get a very quick and hurried opportunity to create something that really isn’t that robust,” said Jon Gibson, co-owner of iam8bit, about their usual projects. “We were well over a year [with Passport to Iron City]. We got to talk to everybody from the production designers who worked on every facet of this to the wardrobe department to Robert Rodriguez, James Cameron, Jon Landau…”

“The Seelig group came to us with a vision for what they wanted to do in the live entertainment space and we helped iterate and bring it to life,” said Amanda White, co-owner of iam8bit.

The Los Angeles location for Alita: Battle Angel – Passport to Iron City starts on January 23, 2019. You can purchase tickets now at alitaexperience.com
