Warner Bros. is focusing less on the DC Extended Universe, especially with Aquaman becoming the #1 DC film of all time at the box office. Now we have updates for the upcoming The Batman film from director Matt Reeves about when we can expect to see the movie, what we can expect from The World’s Greatest Detective, and the Rogues Gallery.
The comics and cartoons have portrayed Batman as very intelligent and with backup plans if things go wrong. The movies, on the other hand, have made him more flawed, where he would sometimes be duped by the villains in big ways. Reeves talks with The Hollywood Reporter about how he wants to bring more of Batman’s detective skills in cinema.
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale,” said Reeves. “It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
If you have played the Batman: Arkham game, it featured a button that activates Batman’s detective mode where he’s able to analyze a crime scene. Sometimes I would have this mode turned on at all times in order to identify enemies easier. It’d be interesting to see if Reeves is going to be inspired by that or will he focus more on Batman’s skills as a detective.
As for the release date, Reeves doesn’t give an exact date, but his answer does give us a better idea of when we’ll get to see the film.
“We haven’t been dated,” Reeves added. “I wouldn’t commit to this, but we’re thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.”
And what about the film’s title?
“Right now it’s called The Batman,” Reeves said. “What it will be called ultimately, I don’t know.”
The director talks about what we can expect from the villains.
“There will be a Rogues Gallery,” said Reeves. “The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”
The actual villains are still a mystery, but it would be interesting to see many of Batman’s popular villains teaming up together. The films have had the villains team up like Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Bane in Batman and Robin, Penguin and Catwoman in Batman Returns, and The Riddler and Two-Face in Batman Forever.
And Reeves adds to the idea that Warner Bros. is no longer focused on the DC Extended Universe.
“Warners believes they don’t have to try to develop a giant slate that has to have all the plans for how it’s going to connect,” said Reeves. “What they need to try and do is make good movies with these characters.”
