IMAX Enhanced Program to bring high standards to home theater systems

Remember the days when you would see the THX logo everywhere? It was a certification saying, “Hey, this product is of the highest quality for your home theater entertainment.” Well, technology has been improving with TVs and speakers getting cheaper while still giving you great audio or video performances. This resulted in THX being a shadow of its former self, but a new standard of quality is coming with the IMAX Enhanced Program. This brings together high-end consumer electronics, IMAX digitally remastered 4K HDR content and DTS audio for the best in audio and video quality.

IMAX is known for its high-resolution formats and projectors in theaters, with big blockbusters featuring IMAX footage like Avengers: Infinity War, Interstellar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Dark Knight. Upcoming films to utilize the format are Avengers: Endgame, Wonder Woman 1984 and The Lion King. IMAX is teaming up with DTS to bring its quality from theaters to the small screen, and that’s where the IMAX Enhanced Program comes in. High-end TVs, soundbars and AV receivers must meet a certain requirement in order to get the IMAX Enhanced logo. It’s pretty simple. If you see the logo, you can be certain that the product will give you one of the best viewing and listening experiences.

4K TVs with IMAX Enhance is required to meet the standard for proper calibration, resolution, color, brightness, contrast, scale of image and sound capabilities. With surround sound, the setup has to be at least 7.2.4, meaning you’ll need 7 speakers in the horizontal plane, 2 subwoofers and 4 height speakers.

I had the chance to check out the IMAX Enhanced demo during CES, and they used the Venom movie as a demo. The climactic battle was intense and seeing the quality of the video and audio was beautiful. And since Venom is being demoed, that means Sony is a big partner for IMAX Enhance. Other partners include Paramount Pictures device partners Arcam, Elite, Integra, Lexicon, Onkyo, Pioneer, TCL, Trinnov and Sound United (Denon and Marantz). Streaming services Tencent Video, FandangoNOW and Rakuten TV have also joined.
