HBO’s latest horror anthology Folklore premieres in February

HBO’s newest foray into the horror anthology genre, Folklore, has set a February 1 release date. The series, which contains six hour-long episodes, will take place in six Asian countries including Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. They also released a trailer for the series, which you can check out below.

Each of the six episodes is based on that respective country’s folklore and mythology, which includes various supernatural beings and strange occult practices. Each episode will be helmed by a different director, with each episode filmed in the local language of that particular country.

This includes the Singapore-set “A Mother’s Love,” where a Pontianak is awaked when a foreman and a construction worker attempt to bury the body of a dead

girl instead of burning her, and the Malaysian-set tale called “Toyol” where a Member of Parliament uses a mysterious woman with supernatural powers to try and help the country’s dire economic condition.

Folklore will premiere on HBO, HBO Go and HBO Now starting February first. The network initially used the horror anthology format for its cult classic series Tales from the Crypt, which ran from 1989 through 1996. Like Folklore, each episode was self-contained and helmed by a different director and cast.
