Escape Room (2019) movie review

Escape Room (2019)

Escape rooms are very fun interactive live experiences filled with puzzles and challenges. We’ve covered a lot of escape rooms, and I mean a lot, and when we found out that there was a movie inspired by escape rooms, we couldn’t resist. Enter Sony’s Escape Room, which we’ll call Escape Room (2019). That’s because there are other movies with the same name. Yep, there are two other Escape Room movies, with one starring Skeet Ulrich (Riverdale). With Escape Room (2019), it features Deborah Ann Woll (Netflix’s Daredevil, HBO’s True Blood), and I came out of the theater pleasantly entertained.

If was fun watching strangers trying to work together in order to escape the deadly rooms, even if it did have a PG-13 rating. The concept isn’t fresh since we’ve seen this before with Saw, but it was interesting to see the different personalities trying to solve the deadly puzzles. With the movie being PG-13, don’t go expecting lots of blood and gore. Hell, it’s not even scary as a horror movie. However, it is intense, and if you have a wild imagination, you will get an uneasy feeling the next time you do a horror escape room.

The film features six characters in the group, each with a past that connects them to the room. Each has been invited, and if they complete the escape room, they will win a lot of money. One character that stood out is the hardcore escape room player, who has done almost a hundred games. The film is definitely taking a fun jab at experienced players, and he did make me chuckle when he thinks all the dangerous elements are just part of the show.

The plot can be predictable in terms of deaths, but it’s fun to figure out what the mystery is behind why the victims were chosen. The puzzles and challenges are interesting, and if you like escape rooms, video games or puzzles, you will get a sense of joy as you try to figure out the puzzles along with the characters.

I was surprised to see Deborah Ann Woll in this film because I thought it was going to be the typical teenagers doing stupid things in a horror movie. (I didn’t watch any trailers or read anything about the film.) However, the cast is very diverse with Taylor Russell (Netflix’s Lost in Space), Tyler Labine (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Voltron Legendary Defender), Logan Miller (The Walking Dead), Nik Dodani (Atypical), and Jay Ellis (HBO’s Insecure).

Each character has their moment, and I wanted to root for many of them to escape. However, once the ending hits, you’ll get a sense of deja vu since it’ll remind you of other horror movies like Hostel, Unfriended: Dark Web and Saw.

The music can be a bit distracting with the use of heavy instrumentals as if you’re at a rock concert. It would have served the movie better if it used the traditional orchestral scores to build on the dangerous moments. Something subtle would have been more effective, but instead, it took me out of the scene.

Escape Room (2019) is an intense ride where I had a lot of fun with the traps and puzzles. The characters all had their moments to shine, and I’m here wondering if I should do an upcoming escape room. The funny thing is that this escape room is being co-produced by Sony, so it should be interesting to see if I come out of it alive.

Score: 3.5/5 Atoms
