Bumblebee sequel in the works after successful box office

Bumblebee - Hailee Steinfeld Bumblebee sequel

Bumblebee wasn’t able to top Aquaman at the box office, but that doesn’t mean the film flopped at the box office. The film made $420 million worldwide as of today with a budget of just $135 million. It made $117 million domestically and $302 million internationally. It’s still impressive especially since this movie focused on fewer Transformers and mainly on Bumblebee, and it had to compete against Aquaman, Mary Poppin Returns and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.

There’s a report now saying that a Bumblebee sequel is in the works. In addition, Transformers producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura talks about the success of the film.

“We had many objectives (including) to bring a new set of families into the series, and that succeeded; in the after markets that will continue to succeed in a big way,” said Di Bonaventura.

“Part of our obligation was to bring people back who had left the franchise or never experienced it which worked well… We are finding our way. Our intention was we wanted to please the core fans but also bring a new audience.”

Now that’s a solid plan. Who knew that making a movie that can cater to hardcore fans and the general audience is a good idea? It also helped that Paramount and the producers brought in Travis Knight, who is the CEO of Laika studios (Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls) and the director of Kubo and the Two Strings.

Bumblebee ended with Hailee Steinfeld’s character saying goodbye to the titular character as he meets with Optimus Prime. The movie is sort of a soft reboot since the timelines are different for when the Autobots arrive. We see Bumblebee and Optimus Prime strategizing in the woods in the end, and this definitely teases us that a Bumblebee sequel with Bumblebee and Optimus Prime is possible. However, the movie did feel like a prequel to the first live-action Transformers film from director Michael Bay, especially since Bumblebee transformed into a classic Camaro and he lost his voice box.
