It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen Microsoft release a webcam, about 8 years to be exact (2010). There’s been rumors starting to circulate that Microsoft might be making their way back into the webcam game. The claim states that there will be 2 4k models coming in 2019, with one of them supporting the Xbox One console along with Windows 10.

I don’t believe the webcam would be as tech-heavy as the Kinect was, but still be able to offer most of the functionality that includes Skype video chats and automatic user sign-ins. Another feature stated for the webcams are the Windows Hello authentication currently only found on Surface PCs.

Now it is worth noting that even though there hasn’t been any official word yet, Surface head Panos Panay hinted at the possibility in a recent interview with The Verge, “Look at the camera on Surface Hub 2, note it’s a USB-C-based camera, and the idea that we can bring a high fidelity camera to an experience, you can probably guess that’s going to happen.” This could be eluding to the USB-C webcam slated to ship alongside the Surface Hub 2 in 2019.

It will be interesting to see what direction Microsoft plans to go in, and whether or not it’ll be a standalone product remains to be seen. CES is just around the corner, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they had some sort of announcement in regards to it. We’ll just have to wait and see. Be sure to stay tuned for our full coverage of CES 2019 as well.
