Netflix announces new format-bending procedural Criminal

Police procedurals are nothing new on the TV landscape, but Netflix is trying to disrupt the format with its new series, Criminal. The upcoming series as a particularly unique premise, by only showing what takes place exclusively within the confines of a police interview suite. This makes for a stripped down, cat-and-mouse drama that will focus on the intense mental showdown between the cop and the suspect in question.

Criminal’s showrunners will include George Kay (Killing Eve, The Hour) and Jim Field Smith (Endeavour, The Wrong Mans).

Despite its stripped-down setting, the scope of Criminal will reach across the globe, as the procedural will be comprised of 12 unique stories set in four different countries: France, Spain, Germany and the UK. Each of the 12 episodes, all 45 minutes in length, will be in the local language of the country it takes place in, as well as be written and directed by local creatives.

In the UK, George Kay will serve as a writer, while Jim Field Smith will direct. Both will share credits as co-creators and executive producers. France’s trio of episodes will be written by Antonin Martin-Hilbert, Matthieu Missoffe and Frederic Mermoud, who will also direct and executive produce. Bernd Lange and Sebastian Heeg will pen the German episodes, while Oliver Hirschbiegel will direct and executive produce. Finally, Alejandro Hernández and Manuel Martín Cuenca will pen the Spain-set episodes, while Mariano Barroso will serve as director and executive producer.

All 12 episodes will be filmed at Netflix’s production hub at Ciudad de la Tele in Madrid, Spain.
