The Edge of Seventeen: YouTube orders pilot based on teen drama

The 2016 teen drama The Edge of Seventeen is headed to the small screen, Deadline has reported. YouTube has ordered a pilot episode based on director Kelly Fremon Craig’s critically acclaimed film from STXtv, a division of STX Entertainment.

The script will be penned by Annabel Oakes (Transparent, Atypical), with Craig reprising her role as director for the pilot. Rather than a remake or sequel to the film, which starred Hailee Steinfeld, the series is expected to tell all-new stories about two high school friends and the pressures of everyday life.

“Annabel is an extraordinary writer with a voice like nobody else’s,” said Craig. “She’s created a new set of characters so full of truth, humor, and specificity, I’ve fallen completely in love with them. For all of the reasons she makes an exceptional writer, she will make an exceptional director. I couldn’t be more thrilled to support her talent and help her bring this to life.”

This marks another foray into original scripted content for YouTube. This year, the ubiquitous video site has a number of projects on deck, including Weird City, a science fiction comedy series from director Jordan Peele, the thriller Viper Club with Susan Sarandon and the comedy series Wayne from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Production on The Edge of Seventeen is slated to begin in January of next year.
