Marvel’s Spider-Man for Playstation 4

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

That’s pretty much how everybody who’s played this game has described it. I mean finally, they finally made a Spider-man game that lived up to it’s hype and made it just as fun as it should be.

Complete with a story so awesome that when you get close to the end, you begin to slow down because you don’t want it to end. I mean this game broke God Of War‘s 3.1 million units sold in the first week record, selling 3.3 million copies in just 3 days! That’s fucking insane! So let’s dive in or… web swing right into this game and get to the real deal about it.

First off, this game was developed by Insomniac Games who are famous for the Ratchet & Clink series.  So you pretty much you know you’re getting a game that people took their sweet ass time with. This game has been in production for 5 years!  So yeah…is it gonna live up to the hype?

The premise of the story is that Spider-man/Peter Parker is 23 years old and has been Spider-man for about 8 years now.  When not fighting crime, he works with Otto Octavius. Most of the Spider-man games start with the first big battle being against common bank robbers or thieves. Nope, not this time! You go right from your soon to be former apartment to hearing word that the police are going to take down Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin of Crime. So right away, you get a big boss fight, and this is where the controls and graphics of this game begin to start living up to the hype!

The web swinging mechanics has always been a big hassle to deal with going back as far as the Spider-man vs Sinister Six game by LJN for the NES back in the 80’s. The Ultimate Spider-man game that came out in 2005 pretty much set the standard for web-swinging controls. But even that wasn’t perfect. This game perfected that, swinging around and web zipping and all that

happy jazz has never been more comfortable and easier to control and handle than with this game. Plus the fact that you can perform all sorts of tricks and combos while web-swinging is really awesome.

The fighting aspects of this game also got a huge upgrade compared to all the previous Spider-man video games.  It’s simpler to handle, and much easier to execute combos and finishing blows which is extremely fun.  My favorite part about the fighting aspect of the game is, unlike previous Spider-man games, there’s no need to wait for web cartridge icons to refill your webbing.  The game does it automatically, for normal webbing. Impact webs, web bombs, web traps, electrified webbing, web drones [we’ll get to that], and various other gadgets and weapons are obtained either at the start of a mission or after you beat the living hell out of a certain number of baddies. Other then that, no complaints.  Trust me, if you’re facing a big fella in this game, you’re gonna want a trip web trap or impact webbing handy. Thankfully there’s a points system to upgrade, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

Besides The Kingpin, the other villains of Spider-man’s rogues gallery include The Shocker, Mister Negative, Vulture, Silver Sable, Tombstone, Scorpion, Electro, Rhino, and of coarse Doctor Octopus. Norman Osborn‘s in the game, but there’s no Green Goblin. There’s hints that may lead to it but they announced a sequel to the game so we’ll probably see that later. Lizard and Mysterio are mentioned in the game but do not appear.

Like always there are supporting characters as well.  Ock starts off as a supporting character in the game, same with Mister Negative under his real name Martin Li, who runs F.E.A.S.T. which is a homeless shelter and food bank. Peter’s Aunt May also works at F.E.A.S.T.  Mary Jane Watson is also in the game but her character has changed a bit.  Instead of being a model and actor, she’s a reporter for the Daily Bugle. J. Jonah Jameson is also around, but in this game he’s since retired from the Bugle and hosts a radio talk show where he spends a majority of his shows blasting Spider-man as always.  I mean you can’t have a Spider-man story or game without a crazy old man screaming “YOU WALL CRAWLING MENACE!”. Norman Osborn is also a supporting character and has no signs of villainy yet.  In this game he’s the Mayor of New York that has very “Trump” vibes to it, even down to the campaign banners. Also Miles Morales is in this game. I’m not gonna spoil much too but your gonna want to see that one for yourself.

After you take down Kingpin, you beat Shocker twice.  Between the Shocker fights, you meet this terrorist group called The Demons while saving Mary Jane and an Auctioneer at an auction house.  Then you learn more about Mister Negative and his plans for revenge against Osborn and the world which involves detonating a bomb that has a deadly virus over the city.  There’s a breakout at both Rykers Island and The Raft which is where the story really begins. After all that, Doc Ock finally embraces his evil side, and unleashes that virus upon the city.  It infects a lot of people, including Aunt May. So now it’s a race against time to get a cure, beat the Sinister Six, and save the day. Unfortunately you guys don’t save them all as there is one major death in this story, a death whom most can predict. And that’s that. Besides a mid credits and post credits scene, that’s pretty much it for the story line.

The game play in general, is a wide open world.  Your strength and power comes from not only EXP [leveling up] but also in points and stuff.  You can upgrade your gadgets and other combos and moves as seen in the screen shots. And just like every other game that has multiple difficulty settings, there are a lot of achievements and various stuff to do in this game from side missions that

involve taking down Tombstone, who’s not a mob boss in this game, but rather a biker.  You also get the task of tracking down The Black Cat. There’s various other great stuff to do in this game, plus random crimes pop up out of nowhere that will keep you busy even when you’ve finished the main story. There’s some hidden achievements that you can uncover, like paying respects at Uncle Ben’s grave. Plus, let’s not forget the infamous wedding proposal gone wrong where you will find somebody asking Maddie for her hand in marriage on a movie theater marquee.  You might want to look up how that story ends because it’s pretty fucked up. As far as the main game play goes, when you’re near the end, you will find yourself slowing down because you don’t want the story to end.

Now, let’s talk costumes.  You start the game off in the traditional Spider-man outfit which morphs into a damaged one after your fight with Kingpin.  Later on, Otto will design a costume for you that you see in pretty much all the promos and throughout most of the game.  You can change your costumes whenever you want, and they’ve got a slew of them to choose from.  From the 3 costumes you’ve seen Spidey wear during his time with the MCU, to a few exclusive outfits made just for the game, to various comic book costumes like the original scarlet spider outfit, to the secret war [not secret wars] outfit, to the fear itself outfit.  Even the costume Spider-man wore from the first 30 issues of the 4th volume of Amazing Spider-man [which is what I decided to wear for a majority of my game play] is available. I have no clue if there’s gonna be more down the line, but with this new DLC story mode series called “The City That Never Sleeps” coming out in October, I’m sure we’ll see a lot more as well as much more game play.

There’s a ton of real-life stuff to snap photos of and unlock achievements in from the bridges of New York to iconic landmarks such as the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, Central Park, Madison Square Garden, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, Grand Central terminal, etc. So as I said, you’re gonna be busy for hours.

All in all, this game will make you want to get a Playstation 4.  Right now is the best time to get it.  It seems like the final stages of console’s development have the best games, and this is turning out to be no different. One moment in this game and you’re going to be hooked. There’s just so much to do, and making a Spider-man game into an open world was possibly the smartest idea that developers implemented. You can tell that Insomniac Games took a note from the Batman Arkham games with this one. As I said, you’re gonna be hooked the moment you pop this one into the PS4.  With a sequel in the works, we’re going to be in for a great era. Some say this game is going to usher in the Marvel video game universe.  If that’s the case, then this is one hell of a way to start.
