Intellivision Amico console announced and will focus on family-friendly games

The Intellivision was a home video game console that came out during the time of the Atari 2600, and now Intellivision company has announced that it will have a new video game console coming out on October 10, 2020 called the Amico. With the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch targeting hardcore gamers with controllers featuring a lot of buttons, Intellivision is aiming to do the opposite of that by offering simple games for the whole family. It’s appropriate since Amico is Italian for “friend” or “buddy”. A reveal trailer has been released, and it shows off all its accomplishments like being the first 16-bit console, first talking video game, first console to offer digital distribution, first pro sports licensing, first creators of the console wars and more. In addition, it features a different controller compared to the typical controllers offered by Sony and Microsoft.

“We are creating a console that parents WANT to buy, not that they were asked to buy,” said Intellivision president Tommy Tallarico during Portland Retro Gaming Expo. He added, “Most every game being made for the home consoles these days is created with only the hardcore gamer in mind. We see a world where everyone is interested in playing at home and with friends, but this isn’t currently possible because the barrier to entry is nearly impossible for a non-gamer due to the complexity of the controllers, intricacy of gameplay, expense of the hardware and software and steep learning curve with an unbalanced fun factor for the beginner. Our goal was to create a console that both gamers and non-gamers are able to have fun with and play together. The Intellivision Amico is our answer to this gaping hole we see within the current video game industry.”

The last time we had a console that had gamers and non-gamers coming together was the Nintendo Wii. Critics were quick to dismiss it, but it sold over 100 million units since its launch.

The Intellivision Amico price range has been revealed including software overview and controller details. Check it out below:

“The average age of a gamer today is 34 years old, and the market reflects that with a broad array of games for people of all ages. Of course, some parents may find that many of those games are not age-appropriate for their children,” said ESRB president, Patricia Vance. “Intellivision’s policy to only offer games rated E for Everyone and E10+ for Everyone 10 and up on its new system makes finding the right games easier for busy families, especially those with young gamers.”

Yeah, this will definitely turn off the gamer crowd looking for mature content, but that’s what Sony and Microsoft are for.
