Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

In the previous episode of Amazon’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Suleiman’s men released Sarin gas at a French priest’s funeral, and Jack killed Ali during a standoff. This episode began with the aftermath of the gas attack.

Irrational

French police in hazmat suits broke through the chained doors of the church. More than three hundred people were confirmed dead. Immediately, Suleiman claimed responsibility for the attack in a video. Jack felt guilty for killing Ali; he likely would have known about the attack. However, he realized that the priest’s death had been part of Suleiman’s plan. His death would have ensured a large congregation including dignitaries. The CIA identified two of three involved in the attack: Ansor “the Chechen” Dudayev and Jabir Zarif.

Refugees

Hanin, Sara, and Rama arrived at the Turkish border. But in light of the attack, they could not accept refugees. Hanin and her daughters saw the news report of the attack including Suleiman’s video. She spoke with an American named Lance Miller about getting visas. She told him that her husband was Suleiman, and she was seeking political asylum. Unknown to her, Miller was an undercover CIA agent working to gather intelligence. Word got to Jack that a woman claiming to be Suleiman’s wife was at the Turkish border.

With no other options, Hanin traded her jewelry to escape. Surprisingly, Yazid was still alive and tracking Hanin and her daughters.

In flashbacks, Suleiman interviewed with a bank. They dismissed his paper advocating for digital banking as the way of the future. They looked down on Suleiman for his ethnicity and religion, despite his intelligence. He sat and spoke with Ali, who was recently given a pistol. French police officers came upon them as Ali smoked a joint. To protect his brother, Suleiman assaulted the officers. After a year in prison, Ali visited Suleiman. Suleiman appeared to have been radicalized in prison.

In Nevada, Victor discovered that one of his targets had been misidentified. He had killed an innocent person. His superior officer ordered him to take a ten-day leave. Victor revealed to Ava that he was supposed to be a pilot. As a pilot, he risked being shot down. He felt guilty that operating drones to him was like playing video games. Ava urged him to right whatever was going on in his head.

“What Do You Need?”

Suleiman met with the leader of the American prisons, Dr. Nadler, a doctor with Doctors Without Borders. After seeing insulin syringes, he offered to run diabetes tests on Suleiman’s son to see if he could be treated orally. Suleiman told Nadler to make a list of what his people needed, and he would get it to him.

The CIA decided to contact Suleiman via the End of Honor video game. Jack planned to impersonate Ali and set up a rescue mission to catch those involved in the attack. Suleiman tested Jack, who failed to respond as Ali would have. Jack mentioned Suleiman’s wife having left him. When Jack got no response, he considered it proof that the woman claiming to be his wife was telling the truth. Jack and Greer headed to the Turkish border to see her.
