Fans of G1 Transformers will definitely get a kick out of the new Bumblebee trailer that was released by Paramount Pictures today. It features some notable Autobots and Decepticons looking just like their classic animated counterparts from the 1980s. Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) seems to know how to pay homage to the classic Transformers while also making them look cool for the live-action adaptation.
Shockwave Movie and G1 Comparison
Shockwave in the film has the recognizable hexagonal chest and head complete with glowing yellow eyes. His color scheme also matches with purple and white. In the classic series, he’s the Military Operations Commander for the Decepticons, with Megatron being the leader.
Soundwave Movie and G1 Comparison
Soundwave in the film has the same color scheme as his G1 counterpart with blue, white and yellow. His chest can open up to release the Decepticon “Mini-Cassette”. In the classic animated series, he is loyal to Megatron, leader of the Decepticons.
Optimus Prime Movie and G1 Comparison
Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots, has his windshield chest, simplistic glowing blue eyes and a mask for his mouth. His color scheme is red, blue and silver.
Synopsis: On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
The film is directed by Travis Knight and written by Christina Hodson and Kelly Fremon Craig. It stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena (I didn’t see him in the trailer), Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker, Pamela Adlon, and Stephen Schneider.
Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21, 2018.
