Kathleen Kennedy is staying with Lucasfilm with extended deal

The Star Wars community has been divided, especially with outrage from fans with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and bullies pushing Kelly Marie Tran, who played Rose Tico, off of Instagram. There were even rumors that Disney wanted Kathleen Kennedy out of Lucasfilm. As it turns out, the rumor is false, and Kathleen Kennedy is here to stay. The Lucasfilm president will be leading the company for another three years with a new deal extending her position through 2021, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

With this bit of news, Disney seems to be okay with the direction of Star Wars despite the critics and the recent box office disappointment that was Solo: A Star Wars Story.

There were many signs that made critics believe that Disney was reconsidering Kennedy’s involvement as the president of Lucasfilm:

  • Kennedy hired Ron Howard to direct Solo after being dissatisfied with directors Chris Lord and Phil Miller.
  • Tony Gilroy took over Gareth Edwards’s director position for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
  • Colin Trevorrow got the boot as director of Star Wars Episode IX with J.J. Abrams taking the reigns.
  • Josh Trank was supposed to direct a Star Wars spin-off film, but the project was scrapped.

With Last Jedi splitting audiences and Solo being a box office disappointment, it’s still not changing Kennedy’s role. Lucasfilm will definitely focus on new stories and it likely won’t go back to fan-favorite characters. So what’s the future for Star Wars? Next up is J.J. Abrams concluding the Star Wars trilogy that started with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rian Johnson will be working on a new Star Wars with new characters, with Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss working on another. In the Disney streaming arena, we have Jon Favreau working on a live-action series.
