“The Fool Who Lost His Birthright to an Outsider”

Iron Fist Season 2 Episode 5

Davos possesses the power of the Iron Fist, which comes to him with a red glow instead of the traditional yellow aura. Through a series of flashbacks, we see how Davos was groomed for the role of Iron Fist by his mother, who instructed Davos to be fierce and to have no mercy when it comes to dealing with his opponents. When Davos was defeated by Danny for the right to face Shou Lao, Davos became an embarrassment to his mother. His mother could not tell Davos that she loved him after that defeat, which fueled Davos’ desire to make her proud and to fulfill his destiny in becoming the Iron Fist.

With the Hand vanquished, Davos sets his sights on ridding New York City of all criminal elements, starting with the Golden Tigers. Though the terms of their arrangement is at an end, Davos rejects Joy’s termination of their partnership, warning Joy that her actions here on out will have ramifications. She can remain at Davos’ side and work for goodness, but if she sets her mind toward evil, then Davos will judge her among the criminals that he has to eliminate.

Unable to locate Danny, Colleen and Misty turn to Ward to put the resources of Rand Enterprises to work in finding Danny. Colleen feels guilt over encouraging Danny to follow after Davos, for not getting through to Danny that the violent path he was walking would lead to more violence, and for not being able to stay out of the fight herself. It is Colleen’s involvement in the fight that results in the tip from the young Hatchet Gang member BB that leads the pair to rescuing Danny. With Danny stabilized and Ward watching over him, the ladies go to collect Joy in order to keep her safe from Davos.

Ward calls on his sponsor and lover, Bethany, to help stabilize Danny, with her filling the role of nurse to the super powered beings that has been performed by Claire Temple in the past. While Bethany is upset with Ward for getting her involved, she is glad to see that Ward does actually care about someone. Unable to leave Danny alone for 24 hours, Ward is stuck by Danny’s side. Ward asks Danny what it felt like to have the power of the Iron Fist. What Danny describes sounds like addiction to Ward.

In contrast to Davos trying to win the love of his mother being Davos’ prime motivation, it was Danny’s mother’s last words, “I love you”, that gave Danny the strength to endure K’un-Lun and to gain the power of the Iron Fist. Danny tells Ward that it is important to say those words to the people they care about before it’s too late.

The ritual a success, Walker presents video proof to Joy that their deal is completed as promised. With payment arranged, Walker offers Joy a piece of advice. She warns Joy that Davos is dangerous. Joy presents Walker a new offer, to provide Joy with protection from Davos. Walker says that the only way to be safe from Davos is to have him eliminated. Before Joy can decide whether or not to take Walker up on her offer, Misty and Colleen arrive.

After a fight, Walker is subdued and handcuffed. Instead of booking the two, Misty and Colleen take Joy and Walker to Danny, where Joy comes clean on the whole affair. It was she who worked with Davos to do this to Danny, and she paid Walker for her involvement. Joy states that she got what she wanted, but Davos is only just beginning.
