Gravity Falls Creator Alex Hirsch Signs Animation Development Deal With Netflix

Two years ago, Alex Hirsch ended his popular Disney series, Gravity Falls, after only two seasons. Hirsch has since contributed scripts to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Detective Pikachu, but he’s about to reenter TV animation in a big way.

Deadline is reporting that Netflix has locked up Hirsch with new multi-year development deal. Under the arrangement, Hirsch will exclusively create new animated series and feature films for Netflix. Hirsch’s latest projects will be geared more towards adult viewers, rather than children. “I couldn’t be more excited to join the amazing roster of talent coming to Netflix”, said Hirsch in a statement. “Plus it couldn’t hurt to be on The Algorithm’s good side before The Singularity hits. Awesome things are coming!”

“Alex is an imaginative storyteller with new ideas who’s quickly developed a reputation as a fresh new voice in animation,” added Cindy Holland, Netflix’s Vice President of Original Programming. “We couldn’t be more excited to work with him as we continue expanding our adult animated slate.”

Hirsch’s alliance with Netflix is only the latest push into animation from the streaming giant. Earlier this month, Netflix debuted Disenchantment, a new animated series from The Simpsons and Futurama co-creator Matt Groening. Netflix’s signature adult oriented animated series, BoJack Horseman, will return for its fifth season in September. F Is for Family and Big Mouth are two of Netflix’s other animated shows that skew older. Lisa Hanawalt’s upcoming series, Tuca & Bertie, also falls within that category, but Netflix hasn’t set a premiere date for the show yet.
