Deadpool 2 (Super Duper $@%!#& Cut) – Blu-ray Review

Deadpool 2 - IMAX Poster

Although we gave Deadpool 2 a slightly favorable review back in May, the film still had some major issues. One of those issues was the lack of screentime for a majority of the film’s side characters. No, I’m not about the X-Force. I’m talking about the other side characters like Negasonic Teenage Warhead or the Eddie Marsan’s the Headmaster. These characters may seem as if they would get bigger parts in the film. Yet they’re put aside to let Deadpool get his time to shine. It’s understandable since his name is the title of the film. He’s the one character that audiences, like you, came to see. However, in terms of balancing characters and storyline, these characters are a waste of space.

Yet the Super Duper cut of Deadpool 2 seems to remedy this by including more scenes with Negasonic, Headmaster, Yukio, and Dopinder. Unfortunately, these scenes do not add more to the overall story arc. However, they do add some substance to their character. This is especially true for Marsan’s Headmaster character. We get to fully see what kind of evil things that the Purifiers do to mutant kids. As for the rest, they’re simply used as comedic relief in these extended scenes.

Speaking of which, we also get completely different jokes than the ones we got in the theatrical cut. It’s not surprising since the comedic improv prowess of Ryan Reynolds and T.J. Miller are such assets to the film. Then again, some jokes seem to hit it right out of the park while some just fail upon delivery. Nevertheless, Ryan Reynolds provides maximum effort when it comes to the action and comedy of Deadpool.

Other than that, the film is essentially the same. The Super Duper cut doesn’t improve on the Firefist character at all. He’s still the same annoying kid that he was in the theatrical cut. The complex intertwining storylines also never fully develop into one coherent plot. Not to mention, Cable still feels as if he was shoehorned into the film. It’s weird considering he was announced at the very last post credit scene in Deadpool. Essentially, it’s similar to how Venom was in Spider-Man 3. Nevertheless, Brolin still kills it as the time-traveling mutant. He also plays Cable as the complete antithesis of Deadpool… As he should be. Zazie Beetz also makes an impressive appearance as Domino. Primarily due to her awesome (and very cinematic) action scenes.

Overall, the Deadpool 2 Super Duper cut is a fun and entertaining companion piece to the original theatrical cut. Although the new cut slightly improves upon the original, it’s still a fun watch for the extended comedic and action scenes alone.

Video
Deadpool 2 - Ryan Reynolds

Deadpool 2 hits Blu-ray with a 1080p MPEG-4 AVC video with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Deadpool 2 boasts an incredible looking video presentation. The black levels are a deep and inky black but there are slight crushing to be found in the shadow details. It gets really dark… Like DC Universe dark. Similarly, the brightness is vivid but there is a slight bloom in the bright areas. However, because of the brightness, the color saturation is vibrant but also brilliant as well. Not to mention, the skin tones look natural too. At the same time, the details are simply superb. Every single detail can clearly be seen including the tiniest of details. Overall, this is a super duper $@%!#& video presentation from Fox.

Audio
Deadpool 2 - X-Force

Deadpool 2 hits Blu-ray with a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix. Similar to the video presentation, Deadpool 2 boasts an equally incredible sounding audio mix. The level of immersion in this audio mix is absolutely phenomenal. During the action sequences, the sound effects dynamically pan throughout the soundstage and fill it up too. Needless to say, it fills it up real good. In addition, the score is able to fill up the entire soundstage as well. Fortunately, it doesn’t overpower the other audio in the mix. They all come together nicely like Deadpool and Bea Arthur. This includes the dialogue which comes in crystal clear from every speaker in your home theater system. That means you can hear every !@#$, $@%!, $&#!, and motherf… Martha loud and clear from your home theater system. Overall, those super duper guys people over at Fox nailed it with Deadpool 2’s audio mix.

As you can see from the long list above, there is a TON of special features on this release. The deleted and extended scenes are both a big miss and a big hit. “Park Bench” is simply an unfunny scene involving both Deadpool and Colossus. Be that as it may, “Hitler Coda” is where it’s at. Yes, this scene is in the post-credits on the Super Duper cut but there are some extra jokes in there that are just as funny as the one on the Super Duper cut. The gag reel is just as hilarious as you might imagine. Needless to say, there are a lot of screw ups and fun on this gag reel. Also, we learn that Ryan Reynolds can’t catch on the gag reel either.

“Cast of Characters” is one of your standard behind-the-scenes featurette which covers the wide array of characters in the film. It’s interesting to see a breakdown of these characters but sometimes they provide information that we already know about them. “Directing DP2” is an absolute love fest for director David Leitch. The producers, screenwriters, and cast talk about their experiences with Leitch and the reasons why he became the new leader of Deadpool 2.

“Secrets and Easter Eggs” isn’t exactly what you think it is. Basically, it’s a featurette about how the difficulties of keeping secrets on set. Essentially what you learn is that secrecy on Deadpool 2 is so tight that it even might rival Marvel Studios’. Don’t worry though, there are some Easter eggs that are revealed in the featurette. “Alt Takes” is another featurette that isn’t what you think it is. At least, not until halfway through the featurette. The first half of the featurette talks about the challenges of creating a fresh highly-anticipated sequel to Deadpool.

As it is with any featurette covering stunts, it’s always an interesting watch. “Action and Stunts” is no different. Seeing how hard the stunt choreography comes together is always intriguing to see. In addition, “Prison Experiment” is a longer behind-the-scenes look at the stunts and production of the Ice Box scene.

Thankfully, “The Most Important X-Force Member” is the featurette that most fans will love. Yes, this featurette is about fan-favorite Deadpool character, Peter. At the same time, “Omega Red” solely focuses on the Easter egg appearance of Omega Red. Yes, that Omega Red. Yes, Wolverine’s arch-nemesis Omega Red. “Swole and Sexy” is a short look at how good Josh Brolin looks, even at age 50. So ladies and gentlemen, if you want to see how good Josh Brolin looks then this featurette is for you. Speaking of Brolin, “3-Minute Monologue” is a hilarious bit where Brolin randomly talks about things while in the make-up chair. “Deadpool’s Fun Sack 2” is simply a collection of all the stuff that help promote the film. These include trailers, stills, and fan events.

Overall, the Deadpool 2 Super Duper Cut is a nice companion piece to the original theatrical cut. Similar to Fox’s Logan Noir release from last year, it’s something that fans of the film will thoroughly enjoy. Not to mention that the audio mix, video presentation, and special features are all spectacular. You definitely get a lot of good on this Blu-ray release.

Overall Rating: 4.5/5 atoms
