Overboard – Blu-ray Review

Overboard - Theatrical Poster

A remake of a beloved classic will always have its critics. After all, why remake a film if you can’t improve upon it. Unfortunately, the brand new remake of Overboard doesn’t improve upon the original. In a way, it’s a needless remake. Nevertheless, the film is still as fun and hilarious as the original.

The biggest difference between the 1987 classic and this film is in the story. Of course, the gender swap is a big difference but that’s not the only one. Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher put together a film that contains the heart and laughs of the original while putting their own twist on it.

Making Leonardo into a playboy caught up in a struggle for the family business may not sound like a funny idea but it actually is. In addition, making Kate a single mom struggling to make ends meet while studying to become a nurse makes her a very sympathetic character. These changes may be off-putting to fans of the original but it works.

Not to mention, the core story of Overboard is here too. In order for the film to be successful, Leonardo needed to have a strong character progression. An arc where he goes from douchebag to good guy. Thankfully, the film is able to successfully accomplish this.

This is all because of the charm and comedic timing of Eugenio Derbez. Much like Goldie Hawn, Derbez is a douchebag but he has an inherent charm that makes you like him. Not to mention, he has really good chemistry with Anna Faris too. Anna Faris always seem to excel in comedic roles and this is no exception. At the same time, she seems to be outshined by Derbez.

Overall, Overboard is a fun and light-hearted remake of the original 1987 classic. It doesn’t improve on the original nor is it a necessary remake but the film is a good film to watch on date night.

Movie Rating: 3/5 atoms

Video
Overboard - Eugenio Derbez & Anna Faris

Overboard hits Blu-ray with a 1080P MPEG-4 AVC encoded video with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Overboard’s video presentation looks amazing on Blu-ray. First of all, the shadow details are a deep black with a slight amount of crushing. As for the brightness, it’s nice overall but it does bloom in the white areas. Unfortunately, most of the film takes place during the day so it’s a bit noticeable.

The colors are nicely saturated in this transfer too. The colors are so vivid that they just pop from the screen. Thankfully, you won’t find any color bleeds in this transfer. In addition, the skin tones look natural. The edge details are crisp and clean. Overall, this a very clean and pristine video presentation.

Video Rating: 4.5/5 atoms

Audio
Overboard - Mel Rodriguez & Eva Longoria

Overboard hits Blu-ray with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. It shouldn’t come as a surprise but Overboard’s audio mix is a bit bland. At the same time, the film shouldn’t be dynamic because of its subject matter. First of all, the audio mix is very dialogue heavy. In other words, most of the audio mix live in the center channel. That is not to say that they completely ignore the other channels. They’re rarely used but they aren’t completely ignored.

The non-center channel speakers come into play through music. The music envelopes the soundstage which gives you a small bit of immersion. However, this is the only bit of immersion that you’ll get throughout the entire film. Nevertheless, at least the dialogue is crisp and clear throughout.

Audio Rating: 3/5 atoms

Special Features
Overboard - Eugenio Derbez

Overboard‘s Blu-ray disc contains the following special features:

  • Audio Commentary with writer/director Rob Greenberg, writer/producer Bob Fisher, and producer Benjamin Odell
  • Chemistry is Comedy
  • Culture Clash
  • Captains of the Ship: Bob & Rob

As you can see, there is a small number of special features on this disc. Unfortunately, the three featurettes are all standard EPK stuff and all of them contain uninteresting interviews. “Chemistry is Comedy” features the cast absolutely gushing over each other and why they got along on set. “Culture Clash” talks about the film’s diverse, mainly Hispanic cast. “Captains of the Ship” features the cast talking about the synergy between Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher. The featurettes contain zero to little insightful information about the film. Not to mention, the featurettes seem a bit sterile too.

Special Features Rating: 2/5 atoms

Overall, Overboard is a light-hearted yet needless remake of the original Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn film. The video presentation is pristine and clean but the audio mix and special features are both pretty boring.

Overall Rating: 3/5 atoms
