Netflix orders dramedy series based on graphic novel Daybreak

Netflix has announced that they are developing a new high school dark comedy, Daybreak. The new series will be a post-apocalyptic dramedy consisting of 10 episodes and is created by Aron Eli Coleite (Star Trek: Discovery, Heroes) and Brad Peyton (Frontier, Rampage) who are serving as executive producers along with Jeff Fierson (Frontier). The release date for Daybreak is unknown at this time.

The official synopsis is as follows: “Based on the graphic novel by Brian Ralph, the subversive dark comedy Daybreak finds 17 year old high school outcast Josh searching for his missing girlfriend Sam in post-apocalyptic Glendale, California. Joined by a ragtag group of misfits including a pyromaniac 12 year old Angelica and Josh’s former high school bully Wesley, now turned pacifist samurai, Josh tries to stay alive amongst the horde of Mad Max-style gangs (evil jocks, cheerleaders turned Amazon warriors), zombie-like creatures called Ghoulies, and everything else this brave new world throws at him.”

Netflix and showrunner Aron Eli Coleite are no strangers to each other as just a couple of days ago Netflix greenlight Coleite’s adaptation of another graphic novel, Locke & Key. Coleite will executive produce Locke & Key with showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill.

Brad Peyton is best known for the big budget disaster movies like Rampage and San Andreas, both which star Dwayne Johnson. Peyton has a relationship with Netflix already due to his time directing and executive producing period drama Frontier. Both Peyton and Jeff Fierson are producing Daybreak under the ASAP Entertainment banner.
