Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox is closing a deal from screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) to adapt Stephen King’s short story The Boogeyman for 21 Laps’ producers Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen (Stranger Things).

The Boogeyman follows a man who recently lost all his children to a creature lurking in the closet. The short story was published in 1973 and was released as part of King’s Night Shift collection in 1978. Short filmmakers have adapted the short story in the past, but the horror pitch from 20th Century Fox and 21 Laps is the first time The Boogeyman has been adapted as a studio feature film.

The Boogeyman is the latest Stephen King adaptation in the works, including upcoming projects like the highly anticipated IT: Chapter Two — the follow-up to last years massively successful horror movie — that is set for release in September 2019, Hulu’s anthology series Castle Rock premiering on the streaming service on July 25, and the upcoming Pet Sematary remake.

After the release of John Krasinski’s hit A Quiet Place, King was quick to praise the film. The screenwriting duo who worked with director/star Krasinski on A Quiet Place will now have the opportunity to step directly into one of King’s own stories where they will also be executive producing.

Robyn Meisinger, Adam Kolbrenner, and Ryan Cunningham will executive produce for Madhouse Entertainment with JR Young overseeing for the studio.

Netflix’s Stranger Things is currently in production on its third season for 21 Laps. Beck and Woods are in post-production on their latest project, Haunt, which was written and directed by the duo.
