This is a big moment for a lot of Transformers fans who aren’t fans of Michael Bay’s version of the transforming robots. With the upcoming Bumblebee film, Travis Knight is taking the reigns for a live-action film in the Transformers universe. Paramount Pictures has released the teaser trailer today, and the biggest takeaway is Bumblebee is finally going to be classic Volkswagen Beetle. Oh, and it’s a pretty heartfelt trailer to boot!
Check out the trailer below.
I’m not crying. You’re crying. The trailer teases the film’s different tone compared to the ones directed by Michael Bay. And Bumblebee’s robot form has a different design with less mechanical parts showing. Instead of Shia Labeouf as the young human friend, we get Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit). Also in the trailer, it looks like Starscream is back, and he’s looking a bit more like his Generation 1 counterpart including the red and white color scheme. (This movie does take place in 1987.)
Hailee plays Charlie Watson, a teenage tomboy who will soon discover that her Beetle is a transforming alien robot. Sector 7 is back, and John Cena plays Agent Burns, who is tasked with hunting down the Autobot.
Travis Knight previously directed Kubo and the Two Strings, which we enjoyed, and I have hope that he’ll knock this one out of the park.
Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21, 2018.
