It has been revealed that Toho Company, Ltd. will be focusing on creating their own shared universe for their kaiju-related properties. Tojo’s Keiji Ota spoke to Nikkei Style (via Bloody Disgusting) about his plans after Toho’s deal with Warner Bros. and Legendary comes to a close after 2021:

“After 2021, we’re thinking of a potential strategy that [releases] Godzilla movies uninterrupted at a rate of every 2 years, although there is a preference for a yearly pace as well. The future of the series and its forwarding developments are very conscious of the method of “shared universe”. Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, etc. could all share a single world view much like a Marvel movie where Iron Man and the Hulk can crossover with each other.”

In the same interview, Ota also revealed that they would not be moving forward with Shin Godzilla 2, stating that he would rather focus on creating a world of Godzilla that creators can use for a long time.

Funimation Films released the Japanese live-action film Shin Godzilla (or Godzilla Resurgence as it’s also known) in all of the Americas (North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean). The film grossed nearly $50 million in Japan alone.

Shin Godzilla (“Shin Gojira”) is a Japanese tokusatsu kaiju film – a live-action science fiction monster movie featuring special effects. It is the 29th Godzilla film produced by Toho. The film is co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi. Both directors performed double duties as writer and visual effects director respectively. Higuchi most recently directed the live-action film adaption of Attack on Titan (“Shingeki no Kyojin”), which was released in 2015. Shin Godzilla stars Hiroki Hasegawa and Satomi Ishihara – both alums of the Attack on Titan movie – and Yutaka Takenouchi.

Meanwhile, Legendary is slated to release Godzilla 2 — the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Hollywood iteration — in March 2019. Mike Dougherty (Trick R’ Treat, Krampus) took over for Gareth Edwards after his departure from the project. Filming wrapped last year.
