Syfy’s The Expanse will end after its third season

Deadline reports that Syfy has made the decision not to renew The Expanse for a fourth season. However, Alcon Television Group plans to shop the series to other buyers.

The Expanse was one of the first shows that Syfy greenlit after the network began recalibrating their approach to program development. Since its creation, The Expanse has been one of the most well-reviewed series for Syfy. Unfortunately, The Expanse suffered from growing competition in the digital/streaming realm, which has become the go-to place for audiences to view science fiction projects.

Season 3 finds Earth, Mars and The Belt at war, with each competing entity vying for control. Now, more than ever, the mission to unlock the secret of the protomolecule reaches an all-time high and every decision made could jeopardize the survival of the solar system.

The series unfolds across a colonized galaxy 200 years in the future, when two strangers become unwittingly swept up in a vast conspiracy. It is based on the New York Times bestselling book series by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under pen name James S. A. Corey) and stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham and Frankie Adams. Elizabeth Mitchell (LOST) and David Strathairn (Alphas) also join the Season 3 cast in recurring roles.

Academy Award-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) serve as executive producers alongside showrunner Naren Shankar (Almost Human, Grimm).

The Expanse Season 3 is currently airing on Wednesdays at 9/8c on Syfy. The last episode is expected to air early July.
