Shenmue I and II coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC with Japanese audio

Shenmue I and II

Sega has announced during Sega Fest in Japan that Shenmue I and II are being re-released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018. If you were thinking about dusting out your Dreamcast or Xbox, you can store them away. And to sweeten things even further, they will both feature English and Japanese audio.

I can remember it clearly, watching a television ad for Shenmue. It featured a male gamer who is so engrossed in the game’s story, he believes he is Ryo Hazuki, a teenager living in Japan who’s on a journey to avenge his father’s death. As it turns out, the gamer is being evaluated by doctors at a hospital. It was a bit cringy, but I did chuckle at the silliness.

I played the game when it first debuted on the Dreamcast, and despite the bad English voice acting, I was sucked into the story. The voice acting was so bad that it was good. Who can forget the kids wanting to play games with Ryo?

Shenmue I and II follow Ryo’s journey as he travels across Japan and Hong Kong, China to look for Lan Di, his dad’s killer. Part II was also re-released for the Xbox, but there was a huge cliffhanger, and fans were left in the dust for over a decade. Well, the good news is that Shenmue III is in the works, and I’m thankful that I’ll hopefully be able to finish the journey before I die.

So what can fans and gamers expect for the re-release? It will have fully scalable screen resolutions, choice of modern or classic control schemes, PC graphics options, an updated user interface and the option to choose between the original Japanese or English dialogue.
