Jackie Chan and Constance Wu to lead Sony Animation’s Wish Dragon
Jackie Chan and Constance Wu will lead the voice cast of the upcoming Sony Animation movie Wish Dragon, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The co-production between Chan’s Beijing-based Sparkle Roll Media Corporation, Base Animation, and Sony Animation will be a retelling of the genie-in-a-bottle tale from the Middle Eastern collection of tales, “One Thousand and One Nights,” in a contemporary setting.
Chan has had one of the most prolific careers for a Chinese actor in film history with hit franchises on both sides of the pond, including Rush Hour and Police Story, while also diving further into the animated realm in the past ten years, co-starring in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, The LEGO Ninjago Movie and The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature. American-born Wu has recently found the spotlight with her role in the hit ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat and being named one of TIME‘s 100 most influential people in the world in 2017.
Wish Dragon will mark the writing and directorial debut of Chris Appelhans, who was on a concept designer on Columbia Pictures’ hit family horror comedy, Monster House, and illustrator on the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s children’s horror novel, Coraline.
The film, which will also feature the voices of Natasha Liu Bordizzo (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny), Jimmy Wong (John Dies at the End) and Bobby Lee (Splitting Up Together) with John Cho (The Exorcist) and Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley) in talks to star, is aiming for a 2019 release.
Sony Pictures Animation has three films set for release this year, including the third entry in the family animated franchise Hotel Transylvania, a sequel to the hit adaptation of the R.L. Stine novels Goosebumps and the Miles Morales-centered Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
