Gucci Mane’s autobiography is being adapted by Paramount Players and Imagine Entertainment in a new biopic

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that rapper Gucci Mane, also known as Radric Delantic Davis, will be the center of a new biopic. Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins from Imagine Entertainment are teaming up with Paramount Pictures to produce the new project. Imagine Entertainment also produces the television show Empire and was behind Eminem’s movie, 8 Mile.

The film is an adaptation of The Autobiography of Gucci Mane, written by the rapper and author Neil Martinez-Belkin. The book is a memoir that allowed Mane to tell his story in his own words and is described as the captivating life of an artist who forged an unlikely path to stardom and personal rebirth. The autobiography came to life after Mane began writing it while in a maximum-security federal prison.

In his memoir, the rapper talks about growing up in a poverty-stricken Alabama home with a conman father, to where he established himself as Gucci Mane on the streets of Atlanta after his mother moved them. He admits that his erratic behavior, incarceration, violence, rap beefs, and drug addictions threatened to end what he had built for himself, starting off as a drug dealer to becoming the father of trap music, the hip-hop subgenre that he helped pioneer alongside fellow Atlanta-based rappers T.I. and Young Jeezy.

Mane was released in 2016 a changed man, “sober, smiling, focused, and positive.”  Stemming from his written words, the new biopic will likely cover his struggles with addictions, feuds with fellow artists, and his road towards redemption. Mane’s first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 was in 2016 as a feature on Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles.”

Imagine Entertainment has retained the life rights to Mane, as well as the movie rights to the book, with the adaptation to be made via Paramount Players, a film studio division of Paramount Pictures.
