Universal Pictures rode The Fate of the Furious and Despicable Me 3 to over $5 billion at the global box office

Universal Pictures has crossed $5 billion at the global box office. This is the second time this has happened in the studio’s 105-year history. The global total to date is $5.003 billion, including $1.605 billion domestically and $3.398 billion internationally. Universal Pictures is the only studio in 2017 to achieve two billion-dollar grossers.  The studio’s The Fate of the Furious and Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 are two of the highest-grossing films at the worldwide box office this year, as well as the two top-grossing international studio releases of 2017. Universal Pictures is the only studio to have two films top two billion this year.

The Fate of the Furious had the biggest global opening of all time ($542 million) and the biggest international opening ever ($443.2 million). The film has gone on to gross more than $1.23 billion worldwide.  Internationally, The Fate of the Furious became only the sixth film in history to cross $1 billion at the international box office, and is the top-grossing foreign film of all-time in China.

Illumination’s animated sequel Despicable Me 3 grossed $1.03 billion worldwide. Illumination films have now collectively made more than $5.7 billion, and the Despicable Me franchise has become the highest-grossing animated film series globally.  Illumination claims two films (Minions and Despicable Me 3) that have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, a first for any animated franchise.

The horror films SplitGet Out and Happy Death Day marked a collaboration between Blumhouse and Universal. The three films began with micro-budgets ad opened No. 1 domestically and grossed more than $630 million at the global box office.

The comedy Girls Trip was the highest-grossing opening for a live-action comedy in 2017 at the domestic box office and the film brought in more than $135 million globally. The Mummy took in more than $400 million, while the sequel Fifty Shades Darker grossed more than $380 million. A Dog’s Purpose took in close to $200 million globally.

In addition, Universal Pictures’ specialty division Focus Features added to the total with films like Atomic BlondeVictoria & AbdulDarkest Hour and The Beguiled.
