Sony’s PS Vita never lived up to expectations.
No one can blame Sony for not wanting to challenge the hybrid Nintendo Switch. When the hyped PSP came out in 2005, everyone expected the portable hardware to topple the Nintendo DS. The expected scenario did not happen. Then, the leader of home consoles tried again in 2012 with the PS Vita. But Nintendo’s 3DS outlasted the Vita, even with a slow start.
This time, Sony is not going to challenge Nintendo’s 3DS or Switch.
“The Nintendo device is a hybrid device and that’s a different approach and strategy,” Sony Corporation gaming chief Andrew House told Bloomberg Technology at the Tokyo Game Show. “We have not seen that as being a huge market opportunity.”
Instead, the company may try to dip their toes into smartphone gaming.
“The Vita experience was that outside of Japan and Asia, there was not a huge demand,” he added later in the article. “The lifestyle shift toward the dominance of smartphones as the single key device that is always with you, was the determining factor.”
The Bloomberg authors later mention Sony’s mobile games studio ForwardWorks. According to a separate article on the same website, its goal is to “Bring PlayStation Games to Every Smartphone.” Sound exciting?
But the emergence of smartphones and continued success of Nintendo has eliminated Sony from making another handheld. Their logic might not be too far off though. The smartphone games in progress just need to be quality games.
