We just found out recently that the next iteration of the Terminator franchise will be coming as early as 2019, and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s a franchise that I’ve come to both love and hate, loving the older films and hating the more recent ones. I think a bigger part of what has me enthusiastic about it, is the fact that James Cameron is returning to direct the film. It also looks like he’ll be bringing some friends as Arnold Schwarzenegger and the original badass Sarah Connor herself, Linda Hamilton, is back baby.
You’re probably wondering how Cameron was able to coax Hamilton back to the franchise; here’s what he had to say:
“Linda and I have a great relationship. We’ve stayed friends through the thick and thin of it all. And she is the mother of my eldest daughter. So I called her up, and I said: ‘Look, we could rest on our laurels. It’s ours to lose, in a sense. We created this thing several decades ago. But, here’s what can be really cool. You can come back and show everybody how it’s done.’ Because in my mind, it hasn’t been done a whole lot since the way she did it back in ’91.”
Cameron went on to speak about how Hamilton could be a great example as an older kick-ass chick in action films:
“There are certainly plenty of 50-, 60-, 70-something guys out there that just keep cranking along doing action movies and killing bad guys left and right. But there isn’t an example of that for women, and I think there should be.”
Personally, I think the only other person to do Sarah Connor justice was Lena Headey in Sarah Connor Chronicles. Either way, it’s going to be great having the gang back together again. I can’t wait to see what Cameron does with the film, as it takes place after the events of Terminator 2: Judgement Day and ignores all the other timelines that came after. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Terminator 6 hits theaters on July 26, 2019.
