It’s a good time to be a cinema fan especially with high-quality formats like IMAX and Dolby Vision, and 4D experiences like 4DX. ScreenX is quickly becoming one of my new favorite ways to watch movies, and they have stepped it up with Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
If you’re not familiar with ScreenX, it’s a format where the projectors display the film onto the movie screen and the side walls, giving audiences a 270-degree viewing experience that really envelops them. (It’s kind of like using VR but without the screen being close to your face.) With that said, I went to the CGV theater in Buena Park, which had a new ScreenX auditorium with walls specially designed to take advantage of the format, and I can say that I was blown away by the presentation. The walls are definitely sleeker and there aren’t speakers placed in the middle (The Koreatown location had speakers on the walls that distracted me from truly appreciating the format.)
Don’t expect the whole film to use the ScreenX format since it’s saved for the big moments. Think of it like The Dark Knight where some scenes were shot in IMAX. As for the scenes that do feature ScreenX, they are absolutely breathtaking. I can feel the thrill as Eggsy is pulled into a car chase sequence in Birmingham and was in awe as the heroes are in the sky above the Italian Alps. The transitions from the ScreenX and normal scenes feel seamless, and they come in at the opportune time like the action sequences. One thing I really enjoyed was when the characters used tech, with the side walls showing off additional tech.

My previous ScreenX experience was at the CGV theater in Koreatown, Los Angeles, for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and I wasn’t exactly sold on the format yet. (You can read my review here.) But with the new ScreenX auditorium in the Buena Park CGV theater, I was truly impressed. If you haven’t seen Kingsman: The Golden Circle yet, I highly recommend watching it in ScreenX at the Buena Park location.
